The first thing to try is opening the door and turning the drum by hand to see if it turns freely, you may have something lodged in the front or back seal areas wedging drum. This is unlikely but easy to do without taking apart dryer.

Some have a glide tightener instead of a roller assembly tightener which are two styles of belt tighteners used. Glide type should be replaced by the roller type and a new belt.(glide type tends to cause belt stretching)

These are things to look for assuming motor is running and belt did not just jump off, which is rare, need to disassemble by lifting top and removing front to work on, with unplugged. There are sharp edges on inside of dryer, so watch out for sheet metal edges.

the most common culprit of banging is an uneven spot on one of rollers. It may not be really noticable, but a slight flat spot can form on them.

If you have a front loading machine,

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt. Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm pulley and motor.
Now is a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the idler arm pulley and also check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots on them then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.

The banging sound your hearing is normally caused by drum rollers having flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
If it is a front load machine you will need to remove the front of the machine off, then that will expose the drum and belt...then remove the drum and belt and the will expose the drum rollers...

Does it bang all the time or just ar start up?

All the time ... maybe you left a sneaker inside :-)

At start up ... normal noise. The belt has to do some fancy curlie cue stuff at the bottom and it takes a while for it to get stretched back to normal just like you do when you are abruptly awakened (when someone presses your START button) :-)

If you remove the back panel you will be able see the drum rollers. There's a good chance they may be worn out. As long as you are replacing the rollers I would suggest replacing the belt at the same time.
Typically when the rollers wear out, the drum drops ever so slightly and the drum wears on the front and rear drum to cabinet seals.The added drag can cause a slow drum and squealing noises.

THERE ARE TWO ROLLERS ON THE FRONT OF THE DRYER THAT KEEP THE DRUM IN PLACE, IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE ONE OF THE ROLLERS IS GOING BAD OR HAS A FLAT SPOT IF THE BANG SOUND IS CONSTANT AND STEADY THIS IS THE PROBLEM. EASY FIX YOU CAN ORDER THE ROLLERS ONLINE

There are two rollers that hold the drum in place. I'm betting that one of those rollers have broken or fallen off. It's not a very easy fix since you'll have to take the dryer completely apart to fix it. Good luck!

if the drum rides on rollers , you might want to check the rollers for breaks or chips which will create the sounds you describe. also check the idler pulley between motor and drum. it can wear and rattle as well....and there may be a possibility that something is caught in the blower fan assembly or the blower fan itself is loose on the motor shaft..
