VHS carriage stuck

When I tried to insert a VHS tape, the carrier was stuck. Instead of pulling the tape into the machine and mounting it on the heads, the carrier got locked down isnide. It took and hour to coax the tape out, and now when I turn on the set, I can hear a smallmotor on the VHS side whirr for a few seconds, pause, and then it sounds like it reverses. It runs for a about three seconds, and then the set shuts itself off. The carrier won't move on it's own. The set stays on for less than 10 seconds before automatically powering off. I felt around inside that narrow little space and could not feel anything broken, detached, or overly loose. The whirring sound seems to come from the front part of the chassis, but I cannot visualize it in the area I can see. We had watched a VHS recorded program just a few days ago and everything worked fine. There were no problems ejecting that tape.

When inserting vhs tape, the player pulls the tape from inserted vhs

That is exactly what a typical M-Load mechanism is supposed to do. Once the VHS tape cassette is inserted, cassette housing cover will be flipped up and two arms will pull tape out of cassette housing to wrap tape around cylindrical spinning head housing that contains video heads and, if VHS HI-FI, audio heads as well. When stop or eject button is pressed, arms will retract and tape will wind back into cassette housing. What type of problem are you experiencing with unit? It may have nothing to do with M-load engaging tape around head cylinder.

My Panasonic VHS Player Model PV-V4020 is locked up so I cannot insert a new tape.

This will be some form of physical damage to the carriage mechanism, that holds the tape. Sometimes it's a simple thing like the flap getting stuck. But often it's a broken piece of plastic.

Cannot load tape. keeps ejecting tape when trying to load.

Remove the top cover from the VCR. If you have children in the house, look for any object lying in the mechanism. If this is clear, insert a tape slowly into the carriage & watch carefully if the cassette tape flap raises up & allows the tape to be lowered down into the mechanism, if not the flap lever at the side of the carriage may be broken. If the tape does lower into position, look to see if the tape is being pulled out by the guide arms, (normally 2 white poles) one of these may be broken. Check the half loading arm is also not obstructing the tape. If any of these parts are broken a new deck mechanism would be required.

turn on the machine. use your figure push on the cassette, when you feel the cassette can't go any farther (don't jam it),and hold it there. press the eject button, you may have to try this couple of times in order for the cassette to come out.

Be sure no foreign object is in the tape well. The other possibility is that the carriage assembly needs work...accordianman

VCR repeatedly tries to play and eject when tape deck is empty

the tape carriage is probably stuck, or something stuck inside blocking the tape sensor.
feed a tape in and see if it does it "with" the tape too

hope this helps

Can't put a VHS in

If the VHS isnt going in it may require a little force as the track might have gotten stuck with dust. if you think its something else i suggest you openj it up and see if these is anything logged in the carriage way or if the tray might just be stuck. once it is open simply insertthe vhs tape and keep pressing in on it until the machine takes it in. while pressing keep you eye on the carriage and see hwat might be stuck as to preven the tape from entering. BUT I THINK IT MIGHT JUST REQUIRE A LITTLE FORCE as it may be binded with lack of use

Neither deck will open to insert tapes in my dual deck vcr

It seems they didnt refirbish it, you should return it..

If for some reason you cant return it.

The problem is your carriage unit is damaged
The carriage unit is the parts that load the tape into the vcr
If you think you are able you can open it up and look if any springs have fallen out. If not then change the unit.

If you cant fix it your self a technician can easily do it for you since it isnt that hard and somplicated to repair, you just need good retainence

Tape stuck in VCR

First locate the load and unload motor, it is the one with the rubber drive band. release the drive band and rotate the gear to raise and pull the carriage back into position.
This should remove your cassette, and put the carriage back into position.

Can't insert tape into deck

Remove the cover again and move the tape carriage all the way towards the front (the carriage is not fully in the locked position). Once that is done you should be able to load a cassette again.
