I turn the power on and all the lights turn on, then the caps lock stays on and all others turn off, sounds like something isn't powering up. then it flashes a few times and the whole computer shuts off. any ideas on what it could be? Thanks.
Solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. if you have put in new ram or just simply took out the ram. you have them put in wrong. try to put them correctly in and your computer will start right up. try to flip them to there correct positions and your computer will up. answer from. The computer mechanic.
I had same problem with a Dell Inspirion 6000, here's what I did, I took out the battery and the RAM put them back in turned it on and found that hey I still got this annoying issue ... so I say why not shake it good .... so with the laptop closed give it a good couple of shakes flip it over plug it and turn it on ... what has fixed my problem .... this means of course something is lose or grounding it out meaning at some point need to open it up and see what the issue is, but this should hopefully get you back up and running.

This problem is caused by the ram not being installed correctly. The recess gap on the ram must be fully into the notch on the board, fully so you can see no space. Just had the same issue and found this was the solution. Computer would not boot up after new ram installed.

I had the same problem. The only solution I found was to give it a good, open palm smack in the hand rest area. Laugh if you will, but it worked like a charm every time.
Sounds like a bad system board. You could try to hold the function key while powering on to see if it goes into the diagnostics, if not, it's the mainboard.
Sounds like it needs a new motherboard. This is a common problem on a lot of Dellś. Overheating is usually the culprit. There are two types of motherboards for this machine. One has an integrated video chip on the motherboard, the other has a separate video card that connects to the motherboard.

The sensible solutions above worked - to recap:
. First attempt af running diaf with FN failed
. Removed RAM
. Wiped and brushed out to ensure no dust/dirt
. Re-inserted RAM carefully and fullt
. Pressed FN as the machine booted
. Accepted the message saying RAM changed
. Also ran the full test suite, seeing I ws there.
. All passed
. Success - machine booted properly!

Had the same problem, I reseated the Memory Modules and it booted up fine.
This has happened to me too, I have the same laptop, And i've had 1 GB of ram for a while(upgraded from 512 MB), Suddenly it started crashing and freezing, I did some memory tests and it turned out to be that when both modules are in it causes that, Oddly enough, i took one out, leaving only 1, And its running fine, a bit slow because i'm multitasking a bit too much. I suspect that it could either be cooked ram or bad mainboard, I opened it and cleaned all the dust, vacuumed it all up, And the same thing happens.
And yet i'm still not certain of what the problem is. I think it may be bad ram or bad main board.

Solution#5 it's most stupid ever heard - this is the way to kill your machine.
The real problem is memory module - in his case, bad connection or intermittent.
Change your BOTH memory modules before make unreasonable statement's like #6 or #4.
Remeber to disconnect battery BEFORE changing RAM module.
Use new branded RAM.
Second (or actually first) RAM socket lies under keyboard in many DELL laptops.
Has anyone even mentioned it might be the bios battery or the main battery could be dead? I'm having this probleme too and I think it's one of the above... I'm not an expert... yet...

For me this occurred after installing some additional RAM. Laptop has been running perfectly fine up to today when it started doing this.
I just tried to install more ram DDR2 into my I6000 and had the SAME problem. The Scroll Lock, Caps Lock, and Num Lock flashed and then the caps lock blinked on and off 9 or so times and it shut down. I saw the shaking method mentioned here and laughed. Then I went over to the laptop and removed the battery then the ram and could hear a little tinking thing in there as I tilted it around and thought, could this actually work? So I shook it a couple of times not too hard but not very gently either up and down and back and forth and put back in the original ram stick and the battery. Low and behold it booted up. Unbelievable. That was the problem, some little piece of something must have been sitting on the keyboard grounding out a circuit or something but it works now. If you have the same problem, just pick up the laptop and tilt it around to see if you can hear something tinking around in there. If so, give it a couple of good shakes and try again.
