Maytag electric range door handle (how to replace?)

I have an MER 5775QAW range with a broken door handle. From articles I have read this seems to be a common problem - the right hand side breaks and the handle swings down - cannot be fixed because it is plastic. I have the parts ($83....) worth but no instructions on how to replace it. I can't seem to get the door apart. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My range door did not come off as the directions indicated, so I ended up on the floor like an auto mechanic disassembling it from underneath. What a bogus setup! I ended up with most of the door front collapsing on me, trying to undo the rest of the screws with one hand.

I finally got the whole thing put back together after 25 minutes and lost of frustration.

Note to self: NEVER buy a maytag again!

Thanks for the help. My "troubles" must be unique.

same issue with right side door handle breaking off...

where is the cheapest place to buy it new ?

  • Anonymous May 18, 2009

Additional notes: 1-it takes a lot longer than 25 minutes, and 2-a person can do it by themselves just be careful with the glass. Also, it needs to be mentioned that this is a great opportunity to clen all these parts since you have it dismantled anyway.

I was able to use the comments on this page to fix my handle. I also noticed that the place where the new handle attaches is plastic rather than metal, but I think that's probably a good thing. It seemed to me that it was the conductivity of the metal that made that piece get so hot in the first place...good luck all!

The above solution is fine, but you don't have to remove the door.  Open the storage drawer for access to the trim screws (3) on the bottom of the door, remove the screws.  Have a helper hold the glass along the bottom. Take the three screws on the top of the door trim out.  Slide out the glass and put in a safe place.  Remove the four screws that hold the handle brackets in place, remove the handle (or tighten if loose). Install the new handle (one screw on each side).  Reinstall all parts in the reverse order of disassembly.  The entire job took less than 30 minutes.

I just did this, and not counting the time I spent online looking up possible solutions or the time I spent cleaning the glass (Just how does the INSIDE of the glass get dirty?!), I think it took me about half hour.

I guess you could do this without removing the door, as in the "Best Solution," but I think, for me, it paid to remove the door first. I was able to do this without a second set of hands.

Removing the door is the hardest part to figure out! There is a little tab on each hinge. It functions as a release mechanism to allow the door to be lifted out. If the door has never been removed before, the tab may be right against the frame of the oven. Pry it away from the frame with a flat-head screwdriver. Once both tabs have been released, keep the door open just a couple of inches and lift it straight up. Then follow the directions for solution #2.

FYI, I found a handle on "PartSelect.com" for about $50, including S&H. I wonder, though, if it's as good as the original: the parts where the 2 screws go in are plastic, not reinforced. The original had metal reinforced holes to receive the screws. (And that's the one that broke off!)

Anyone who would pay $50 or more for a stupid handle is insane. But then, that's how the manufacturers keep making money on the original item.

That's where I got mine. It was about the cheapest place I could find. I bought a bottom trim too, because that was all rusted out. I notice that the replacement was all plastic. I'm not sure if the handle got cheaper or if the metal + plasitc was the problem. I think it's planned bsolescence. If they made the thing out of all metal and isulated it. it might last more thas a few years. I'm tempted to build my own handle if this one breaks.

Had a hard time, so I took some pictures. Here they are in case anyone else finds them useful.

I couldn't get the door off, please take a picture if you know how.

1- remove storage drawer
2- remove 5 screws on the bottom of the door that hold the glass in place (two on each side and one in the middle). The glass will drop down - if I had to do it over again I would pull the middle one last.
3- remove 9 screws holding the handle assembly (3 across the top, 1 each on the outside edges, and two on each side about where the handle connects, All but the top screws were completely hidden by the glass).
4- Once you have the handle assembly off it is a quick fix. Two simple screws. You just have to take off 14 screws to get to them.

I just replaced mine, you'll have to disassemble the entire door frame. 1. Remove the door. Open it to the first stop (broiler setting) and lift it out. 2. Lay it on a flat surface with front up and remove the bottom trim as well as the side trim. 3. Remove the glass. 4. Remove the top trim and the two brackets to which the door handle is attached. 5. Attach the new door handle to the top trim and the brackets. 6. Attach the top trim/brackets/door handle assembly to the door. (two screws for the brackets) 7. Attach the side trim pieces with the screw on the side only. 8. Slide in the glass and gently push it into place under the top trim. 9. Attach the bottom trim and the screws for the side trim pieces. 10. Set the door back onto the range. 11. Note to self - next time don't buy a Maytag. Hope this helps.

So thankful for the helpful 'how to' instructions. I would have been lost without the help. I was ok until it came time to screw the bracket back into the door. 2 of the holes seemed to strip and the screws didn't want to tighten at all well. But, the other 2 connecting the bracket tightened well and all seems to be solid and secure. I still can't believe these handles didn't come with instructions on how to take off and reassemble. :(

My brother and I followed the suggestions above to repair our mother's oven handle. Step one is a little vague. We needed to release a latch before the door came out. We struggled for over an hour to get the door off. Once we got that done, the rest went fine. Maytag should take some responsibility for this issue. wisconsinbro&sis

Need a parts breakdown of the right side door handle, something is broken and I can't open the door from the outside

IT will be difficult to get a parts break down of what you want so I suggest two things . Go to a wreckers and look at a door lock the same as yours or go to the dealer spares and have a look at their break down to see what would have broken. Most spares people are willing to help correctly identify the parts for you.

HOW TO OPEN HATCH BACK LOCK, IF ITS BROKEN

the sequoia hatchback handle breaking is a known problem due to the extremely low quality of the plastic. 1st you have to open the back door! there is a small pin to the right side of the hatchback door exterior handle. bend a coat hanger and put it on the small pin, pull down and the door will open. Then remove inside panel and you can undo screws and replace the hatchback door handle.

I have 2 schlage door handles that are suppose to be able to be used right or left handed. I can't get the handle to turn to the opposite direction. (if it is set to be installed as right handed, I need...

How does the door handle even know if it is in a right or left handled door?
The handle should retract the latch with a quarter turn clockwise OR counterclockwise, so it should make no difference at all.
The only thing that is right or left handed is the direction the latch bevel points, so that it will retract when you push the door shut.
And the latch has nothing to do with the handle.

Are these circular door knobs, or is this a handle that has to then point at the hinges?
Because it seems to me that if the direction the handle points is the problem, you simply put them on the wrong side of the door.

My samsung SMH7187STG microwave handle broke off.

You can order new "cap handles" (the plastic parts that join the aluminum handle to the door for 3.99 each plus 8.99 shipping and handling at the Sears Parts Direct Website. The part number is DE67-00222C. When you have the parts in hand, open the microwave oven door. On the inside surface of the door their is a black plastic frame around the door that pops off easily (gently use a screw driver to pry up the door frame) so that you can have access to the screws that attach the end caps to the door. You will need to hold the remant of the cap handle (the part that is probably broken off even with the glass surface on the outside side of the door) still while you unscrew the screws. Once the screws and broken remnant of the handle caps are out, you are ready to put new handle caps on the handle, then put the handle with the new handle caps on the door. By the way, Samsung was absolutely NO help with this. The agent I chatted with denied that their were any reports of the handles breaking off, so I had to cut and past the postings about the door handle breaking off ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE under "Community Q and A" into the chat box -- still the agent did not acknowldege the existance of these reports...or the possibility of a poor design. I asked for them to send me a couple of the $4 parts as a good will gesture....got nothing but lofty words about Samsung commitment etc. and only a authorized technition blah blah, no action. All you need is a strong thumbnail, a phillips head screw driver, new handle caps.

Rightside interior door handle not opening door

It could mean the rod connecting the handle to the latch has broken. You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. and you can access the innards of the door

If you put the door at a 45 degree angle on the hinges, it will lift right off. Then once on the ground, it should be easy to remove the screws of the inner panel and expose the screws that the door handle attaches to.
