My bernina 440 makes a loud buzzing noise the first time I turned it on after a power outage. It stills sews but sounds awful.

Is your bobbin winder on?
I get that one in my shop about 1-2 times a mounth.

If your bobbin area is making a noise, then do NOT sew with the machine until a reputable technician looks at it. You may have thrown something just a little off line - not enough to affect sewing NOW, but it could easily cause troubles down the line.
I suggest you call ahead and talk directly to the repair person - not to the sales person. Ask if you can bring in the machine while he/she is in the shop so they can listen while you run it.
You aren't trying to cheat the store out of the repair charge, just ensuring that the problem is diagnosed correctly.
You paid lots of money for this machine - it deserves good care.

Could you let us know which machine this is.....
In the meantime....the damaged bobbin is not good, replace it/them........if you have a top loading drop-in bobbin, check for needle damage on the plastic bobbin case (remove needleplate to access).
If there is evidence of needle strikes, if mild, you could try to use very fine wet & dry emery paper to smooth, if severe, buy a new bobbin case.
There may be a load of lint under and around the bobbin case too, remove and clean up this area. If very dirty, use methylated spitit on cloth or cottonbud (QTip) to remove grime (don't soak)

Hi - a few suggestions:
At the age of your machine, many other owners actually have it "rebuilt" by an authorized Pfaff service person. This model is one of those that's worth the investment compared to buying a new machine of the same caliber/quality.
If you are comfortable removing the top cover, you may be able to look at the internal parts to see if anything is broken. This will at least give you an idea of what may be happening.
Many authorized techs will not charge you to look at the machine and give you a quote. We'd suggest calling a few sewing machine stores in your area. Don't hesitate to ask friends for their recommendation of a good service person.
Hope this helps - please don't hesitate to respond if you need further info or clarification.
Happy sewing,
Kim & Linnette

It was the bobbin winder motor...I feel silly, but at least it wasn't serious.
I'm glad you asked, because I just learned why my sewing machine was making the loud buzzing sound.
I'm so grateful you posted this! I'll try to remember the bobbin winder should it happen again!!!! Thanks so much!
