I recently had the (2) front strut mounts replaced on my 87 audi coupe. The car was making loud clunking sounds especially when coming to a stop and then again when excellerating. Also, I could feel every little bump on the road. So I had my mechanic check out the front struts and shocks. He immediately noticed that both front rubber strut mounts were not there anymore leaving a big gap on the top of both strut's. So he replaced both front strut mounts. Things improved but their is a different "Loud Clunking Sound" coming from only the front passenger side wheel area. This occurs only when making a slow turn into a parking space, or u-turn, but not at high speeds. So my mechanic tried to tighten down the mounts but they were already tight, not loose at all.
Any idea what the problem might be? Does anyone have a diagram of the entire strut assembly with all associated parts?
Thanks in advance.
Mark
Any idea what might be wrong?
The car is aging
there are other bushings and ball joints to make noises at that speed
the top rubber mounts failed for a reason
if i were on that job i would have replaced both gas struts
at the same time....
not much structure to the top strut mounts

very common problem is the sway bay end links that attach to the strut from the sway bar. They sound like a light chuckling knock over bumps. The bushings that hold the subframe up wear or the bolts loosed due to the bushings wearing. usually the rear ones The bushings are 2 piece ,upper and lower Tighten with 18mm socket

-it could be the sawy bar linkages
-but also check to see if the struts are leaking or that it looks damp
-but because you said it doesn't look like it bouncing when you hit a dip most likely it could be that the struts are dead
-check to see the cars ride hieght that would give you a clue

Usually a clunking sound is CV joints, however, take the two bottom bolts off first, make sure you don't over extend the cv shaft. It's better to have another person to hold the strut while you take the nuts off on top. I just replaced mine on my Caddy because the dampening was shot. I have never heard of struts clunking when turning. Always CV's.

inner joints a plunging joints have problems acceleration jolts from a dead stop... the outer rezzepa joint clicks usually when turning thats the balls falling out trunion..... not usually clunking ... possible wheel bearings they are pressed in on front wheel drives... or even a tranny mount maybe ...it almost sounds like somethings loose ...its hard to diagnos online..srry i need more info about the symptoms...
