Your owners manual should give you the recommended weight.
Most newer vehicles in normal climates use 5w-30 oil.
The brand is not as important as the correct weight.
Hi Stephen.. Thanks for your reply!! I didn't finish typing my question but you certainly answered it. I was more curious about the brand and if there was a difference in using one or another. I've been going to a mom n pop place who seem to take care of me very well but I always wonder about stuff and thought I'd ask..
In some ways you get what you pay for, so some brands may have better quality than others. But they all have to meet car company standards to handle the factory warranty requirements.
What's your take on synthetic oil? I keep finding information that suggests Royal Purple Synthetic is the best.. But the cost of synthetic oil is stunning to me! I know that making maintenance investment is better than replacing the whole engine or car.. but I am still cautious about switching completely...
Well this is just my opinion based on 40+ years in the car biz. And I am in no way knocking your car. But I think the investment in synthetic oil is only worth it in engines desiged to last over 150,000 or 200,000 miles. In those cars the added cost would be offset by the savings in making those expensive engines last as long as possible. In economy cars, extra effort like high priced oil will not add anything over basic maintenance that you would see in the long run. As long as you change the oil and filter every 5,000 or so and do the required service work, you can expect to get 150,000 from the car. And that would be a good return on investment for the dollars.
Ah ok.. No, I didn't think you were knocking my car. I know what I have and it's been a great car. I do the oil changes as suggested although my lube shop has me coming in every 3000 miles.. Thanks for all of your comments. It really does help!
