Background:
I got this mp3 player for my husband because of its expandability. He drives a lot and I got him a good radio/ cd player (with a built-in mp3 player jack) for his car, but he always ruined his CDs because they sat in his car in heat and cold.
I filled it with part of his music collection and wanted to use the expansion slot to add more songs.
Problem with micro SD card:
I first bought another brand of micro SD card (2 GB) which wouldn't work, then bought a 2 GB Sandisk micro SD to see if that would. (I read in a forum that it might not take a card bigger than 2 GB). So far I have not found any action that will let my computer recognize it, although the Sansa itself ackowledges it is there. I have tried this on 2 different computers, one using XP SP2 and the other using Vista.
General problems with my computers recognizing the sansa:
The XP sometimes recognizes the sansa, sometimes doesn't. I have had to fiddle with the USB settings to get it to recognize it. I was able to add music to the mp3 player using this, and pretty much filled it up. Now I can't add more, nor can I create playlists.
On the Vista machine, the device shows up but only shows these folders:
Photos (empty)
Record (0 bytes
tmp (empty)
Video (empty)
version.SDK (512 bytes)
VERSION (512 bytes)
It doesn't show my music folder at all! Obviously, I can't add to a music folder if it is not there, and the micro SD isn't recognized either.
Another issue:
The only other problem is that every time we turn it on, it takes 10- 20 minutes to "refresh database." I'd obviously like to whittle down that time!
What does work:
The player works and has great sound through my husband's car speakers and earphones.
What we want:
I'd ideally like to set this up so that he could have a main collection, with his perennial favorites, and several 2 GB micro SD cards with other collections that he could swap out. I don't know how to do that. Would it work to fill the cards through my computer's card reader and put them in the Sansa to play?
I'm not very tech-savvy although know some basics and can follow directions. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you!
There are 3 ways to solve your problem, but all of them are rather kludgy. This is an old player and the integration of the microSD card is not done very well. I believe with the newer players these sorts of issues are not problems. Anyway, here are your 3 possibilities:
1) You can load your music directly onto the card before you put it into the player. Most cards come with an adapter that lets them fit into slots that are for regular SD cards. So if your computer has a slot for an SD card (or if not, you can plug the card into a card reader and then plug the card reader into the USB port on your computer) then you can copy and paste mp3 files onto the card. This is a drag because you can't use Windows Media Player to do this, but instead need to open the folder where the MP3 files are and then copy and paste them onto the card. But it works
2) This is slightly easier. Before you connect the Sansa player to the computer go to the settings part of the main menu and then select mode. You should see two choices. One is MTP and this is the setting you want if you are using the player with Rhapsody service. The other setting is MSC and this lets your computer recognize the Sansa player AND the microSD card. Once you have selected the MSC mode, then you can connect the player to your computer. When you look at the drives on your computer, you'll see 2 new drives. One is the Sansa 280 and the other is the microSD card. Once you see those, you can copy and past MP3 files right onto the card (and/or onto the Sansa). Again, you have to go the folder where your MP3 files live and cannot use WMP to do this
3) I haven't tried this, but others say that a free program called rockbox (www.rockbox.org) let's all this work much better. It sounds complicated, as it puts kind of a new operating system on your Sansa and it may not be reversible, so proceed with caution, but some people love it.
Hope that helps
