I was trying to sew through very thick fabric. The machine "jammed" and "beeped" at me. Now, the needle hits the bottom of the bobbin case before the needle bar is at the lowest point of its downward stroke. There is a white plastic disc in the bottom of the bobbin case, and the needle is striking it. If the bobbin case continues its revolution, the needle is pulled to the side or bent, and leaves a scratch on the plastic piece. This is the first time I've used my new machine. I hope you can help me.
This description sounds like the machine is out of time. The needle should match up with a cut out section in the bottom of the bobbin area. If it is hitting, the timing has slipped, probably from sewing on a fabric that was too heavy for the machine.
So, how does one fix this?
My best advice, take it to Singer repair center.
I normally find a loose screw somewhere in the machine when this has happened. Remove the bobbin case, put fingers in hook and hold it firmly so it can't turn and rotate the handwheel. If the handwheel can turn while the hook is stationary, you will need to remove the covers and find what has come loose to allow the movement. It's a little complicated to explain. Save the grief and either return the machine for another or have someone set it for you.
