How to achieve full zoom with a Nikon 55-200mmf/4-5.6G ED lens?!

So I just got this lens and I have it on automatic. When the zoom ring is at the highest number, it seems like that's as far as it'll zoom and that's not very far. Seems to me that it should be able to zoom a good distance away.
When I was using it the other day on automatic, it automatically zoomed right in on something that was VERY far away! So it obviously can zoom in that far away, I just need to know to how make it do that when I want it to thank you!

1) What camera body are you using?

2) I do not understand your assertion that it automatically zoomed in. Zooming is a manual function. The automatic functions of your lens pertain only to focusing on of the subject so that your picture is sharp and ensuring that the correct amount of light is admitted so that you have a correct exposure.

3) Are you sure you were turning the zoom ring and not the f-stop ring? The zoom ring is labeled 200 on one end of the scale and 55 on the other. It is also the widest ring on the lens barrel. When you rotate it, the physical length of the lens will lengthen as you rotate it clockwise (viewed from behind the camera) and shorten as you rotate it counter-clockwise.

4) For reference, at 200mm the angle of view on your lens should be 10 degrees and at 55mm about 40 degrees.

I have a Nikon D3100 and want to buy a zoom lens 70-300.Please help I am confused is a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G compatible? And is it automatic focus?

That lens will work with the D3100, except for the autofocusing. In order to autofocus with the D3100, you need AF-S lenses, such as the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or the
AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR.

I dropped my 14-24mm F2.8 and now the zoom ring is jammed. Help !!

I've done the same thing before and the only advice I have to offer is to LIGHTLY, LIGHTLY tap around the lens (360 degrees) at the zoom ring with something like a Sharpie marker. If that doesn't work send it to Nikon. You spent a lot of money on this fine lens so if a "Quick Fix" doesn't do it don't mess around.

Good Luck, I feel your pain.

My Nikon 17-35 F2.8 zoom won't Auto focus or show F stop

The F/stop isn't supposed to change when you focus. Depending on the camera, you change the f/stop by either turning the aperture ring on the lens or turning a command dial on the camera body.

My nikon 55-200 zoom lens is stuck at full zoom

Don't force it.
Did you get dust or dirt in it?
The only solution is to bring it in for service or send it to Nikon if it is a USA model.
Nikon USA will NOT repair any gray market items.

Auto focus at full zoom not responding Nikon D80 with 18-200mm VR

Hi - I own this lens and it manually focuses at all focal lengths (hard to see at 18mm unless your subject is extremly close). You may need to get the lens checked. BTW - Mine was set as follows when I checked for you:
  • D80 was "on"
  • M/A
  • VR = Off
  • Normal (not Active)
Hope this helps!
