The room smells after vacuuming, even after changing the bag. What can I do to stop the smell.

There may be a build up of dust in the machine. Turn it over and remove the screws that hold the beater bar cover and see if there is any white like powder caked on the inlet area.

Take the filters out and turn the vacuum on, if it will stay running without the filters in it you need to replace the filters. Filters should be replaced every few months. Clogged filters still pick up some dirt but miss a lot plus it causes the motor to run hot which will cause damage to the motor reducing it's life.

Oreck XL air purifier motor failure

My Orek was making such a bad noise that my wife was going to sell it at a garage sale, I'm glad she didn't. It takes about 20 minutes to fix. All you need is a phillips screw driver, can of compressed air (or air compressor) and a can of silicone spray.
Pull out the filters and turn the unit upside down. Using a phillips screw driver unscrew the 9 screws holding the bottom to the top. remove the bottom. Use care as to not damage the fan. The fan will stay attached to the motor , pull on it and use a good cleaner like 409, Simple Green or a similar product. Wash clean and dry. Next get out your air compressor and clean everywhere, see the silver bearing holders on the side of the motor? Get out your can of silicone spray and give a good squirt on both bearing (close to the shaft. also spin the motor with your hands. See the large thing attached to the shaft? Those are the windings. See the metal housing the winding spin close to? Spray the silicon in there, a good amount. Make sure you didn't get any silicone on the end of the motor shaft where the fan sits on. If you did get some nail polish remover or acetone and wipe clean a few times. Then reassemble.
My Orek was horribly noisy, now it's quiet. My wife says is beeter than new.....

XL-15 Classic Living Air emmitting Foul Odor!!

Ionizers do cause a bad odor to happen. I work in the copier business and do work around machines that can cause an ozone to happen when there are ran. Copiers like ionizers can cause an ozone to happen because the air particles are being electrically charged. The smell isn't good to be breathing in as well.

Here is an EPA report about ionizers

The Consumer Products Safety Commission is going to be making a decision about the health effects on ionizers by the end of the year. Their decision can effect selling ionizers all together.

This industry should have been regulated years ago and after what happened to Sharper Image this year due to their arrogance it isn't doing the industry any favors. They went out of business because of Consumer Reports findings and tried to sue them for it.

If you really want the air in your house cleaned, the best way to do it is using a hepa filter.

Living Air XL-15 Classic - Foul odor!

Hi cant standit,

Can you control this odor by adjusting the ozone (O3) control? High levels of O3 smell obnoxious or irritating to some people; you want a fairly low concentration (~40 ppb - that's parts-per-Billion, not much).

It sounds like you've done everything else right. Have you consulted with the dealer you bought from? How about EcoQuest? If it's not the O3 level being too high, then perhaps there's something goofy with the unit. If it's under warranty, pursue that option. You should have contact infor with the unit; respond if you need it and I can post it.

Let me know.

When ionizer is on even

Hi willy,

The ionizer itself shouldn't smell. I wonder if you're smelling O3 (aka ozone or activated oxygen), or if there's a short-circuit of some kind that is causing electrical components to overheat/burn. Burning electronics and singed hair smell more alike than ozone (which isn't the same as ionization, incidentally.

Write back with more details if you can, preferably with any details about your observations.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,

Jon
