Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1:2 Zoom Lens for Canon EOS Cameras with Logo
Daniel Roe Posted on Sep 20, 2012

Tamron 70-300mm macro lens suddenly has developed some kind of interface problem with the Canon T3i.

"Error message 01: Communications between the lens and camera is faulty; clean the lens contacts." The contacts are clean. If I remove and reconnect the lens I get a good response for no more than the first exposure, then the problem resumes.

Try gently cleaning the electronic contacts on the lens's mount with an eraser. This will remove any mild oxidation on the contacts. If this doesn't resolve the problem, then contact Tamron and ask if there are any issues using this particular lens with a Canon 40D.

cleaning the contacts on lens and camera is about all you can do.
If its faulty and still under warranty then you'll need to send it back to where you got it from, any attempt to fix it yourself will void the warranty.

Was I sold a 'pup'? Tamron lens box says AF55-200mmF4-5.6LD MACRO. Can't find macro setting on lens or instructions. Looking at your site, Product Details says 'No Macro'. So what's...

Excerpted from a www.photo.net review of the lens:

Though the Tamron AF 55-200mm Di II LD Macro has "Macro" in its name, it's not really a macro lens. Maximum magnification is about 1/3 life size (Tamron spec it at 1:3.5) as you can see from the following image below, which was shot at 200mm and at the closest focus distance (0.9m/37.4"). This isn't too bad, but it's more of a close focus telephoto lens than a "macro" lens (bolding for emphasis added).

So, have you cleaned the contacts as you were advised? You do this by removing the lens and cleaning the contacts on the camera body and on the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

I have a tamron 70-300mm i had a canon 1000d and the lens worked pefectly fine with it but nw i hav purchased canon 550d and when i conect my tamron lens with it , it shows an error 01 please assist me

This is the kind of error which you always risk these days in buying lenses which are not from your camera manufacturer. Error 01 simply means that the camera cannot communicate with the lens. Canon's protocols are not open standards and third party manufacturers have to reverse engineer to produce something which works. As they're working in the dark, they cannot always arrive at a solution which makes all models suit all Canon bodies.

You have two possible solutions:-

Visually inspect the contacts on the lens and the camera body and if they're anything other than clean and bright then use a clean pencil eraser on them. Be very, very, careful not to let any of the rubber crumbs into the lens or the camera body.

If that fails, visit the Tamron website to see whether the lens can be returned to be updated for other bodies. if it can't then sell it and buy a later Tamron model or better still a Canon one. They may cost more, but the results are better and their resale value is much higher.

Will not autofocus

Hey shutterbug72,
According to the manufacturer the first thing you should try is cleaning the lens contacts with an eraser. If that doesn't work you could try removing the battery and reinserting it to reset the camera. It seems to me that if there was a compatibility issue going on you should have seen that from the start. As far as what lens you should buy both Tamron and Canon make very good lenses, but with Canon lenses you shouldn't ever have compatibility issues. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan
