It would help to know what type of machine it is.
And if the switch is a moving machanical switch or digital ?

1991 JEEPWRANGLER HEAT SWITCH WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE

Slide levers like that usually move a cable. When they will not stay in place it usually means whatever they move is binding up. I suspect your heater valve is binding.

1998 escort zx2 dome light stays on when switch is set for door; all other indicators, chime for key in ignition etc seem OK. Light works normally in switch on and off positions.

It should stay on for about 30 seconds and go off. Otherwise, the car is 11 years old, so find a switch position which does not drain the battery.

Tail Lights stay on all the time.

under the dashboard on the drivers side. look at the brake pedal lever. there should be a switch attached. push switch in and twist to remove. then pull the button as far out as it will go. while holding brake pedal down reinstall switch. then pull pedal up to top. this will reset the brake light switch. if they stay on still, then just replace the brake light switch.
