My Nikon D40 is frozen on the screen "Connecting to PC". I have left the battery out for months, tried resetting it with the reset button, tried reformatting the SD Card, etc. When I turn it on now, it says to reset the clock, when I attempt to do so it returns to the "connecting to PC screen"

as described - camera comes up with screen saying "connecting to PC" and will not do anything else. This is likely to be the last Nikon product I'll ever buy after the viewfinder fiasco with a collpix 8800 - that one lasted anout 18 months and then the viewfinder went away. Nikon store in AZ says it cannot be repaired. The d40x was the replacement for it and now it is busted.

Connect the mini usb calbe to Camera only. Camera will working like used to be without cable. Go to setup menu and Change USB setting to P, PTP. then unplug the miniusb and hopefully camera will work as it once was.

It worked for me :)

How to turn on Discovery Mode for Nikon D40 Digital Camera

There is nothing about a "Discovery Mode" in the D40 manual. I am not sure if this will work, but try resetting the camera to its default settings. Push the menu button on the left side of the LCD and scroll down to the pencil symbol. You will find an item on that menu called "Reset". Once you do the reset, see if the "Discovery Mode" is there. Frankly, I think you would be much better off if you read the D40 manual. In case you lost yours, I have attached a link where you can download it in pdf format.

Nikon d40 flash won't fire

Hi,

If it clicks when the flash is already open, it seems there would be a problem with the flash open sensor. The camera thinks the flash is closed, so it tries to open it again and it refuses to fire, because firing in the closed position would blow the bulb.

The D40 flash is a bit different, but if you open it (just unscrew the two little screws in front) you'll recognize the sensor clips. Open and close the flash and see if the make contact when open.

(And DON'T fire the flash when open, or at the very least don't touch anything in there when firing or you'll get zapped.

Goodluck..

Camera wont turn on My Nikon D40x wont turn on at all, i have been using it, then plugged it in the my laptop with the USB cable, unplugged it to take more pix, and it now wont turn on at all!!

Just a suggestion ... remove the lens, card and battery. Recharge the battery completely. Install the lens, card and battery then do a hard reset...

Hard Reset:
With D40 you need to install the lens, the card and the battery then open the cover under which USB and video sockets are. There is a small button in the hole. Press it with pencil tip or something and the camera will be reset losing all settings and clock time.

My nikon d40 displays "shutter button deactivated, recharge battery".but i charged the battery, my camera still wont work.help please

A couple of things to try, and if these don't work you will probably need to have it serviced.

1. There is a reset button which may fix it. It's described on the first page of "Troubleshooting" in your manual. The camera diagrams at the front of your manual will help you find it, near the connector cover.

2. If it doesn't work after the reset button, pull the battery out and leave it out for two days, then put it back and try again.

Frozen screen

A friend has an Archos 404, media player, and it foze up while she was using it. Could not power it off or get it to do anything. Ended up having to remove the 4 tiny screws and then Remove the battery. This reset the unit completely. Put it back together, including the battery, and the unit powered on and worked correctly. Often a simple system reset can fix most freezing issues.

Zen frozen

Go to recovery mode, and do a disk clean up. If that doesnt work, then you might have to format it.

Did you reset it properly? To reset your zen, put a pen head in the hole under the power button for 20 seconds
