Check your sound card. Open "Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management" and click "Device Manager" on the sidebar. If you have problem, the app will show a warning symbol.
Do you see anything on the monitor screen? Does the tower make any beeping noise or clicking noise, or does the fan tries to start up when you power the computer on? Are the cables connected properly?

Presumably, you bought _exactly_ the correct set of Recovery Disks for your specific HP.
Sounds like "hardware" problems:
* loose cable between motherboard and disk-drive,
* bad RAM (download and run the free 'MEMTEST86+' software to "test" your RAM),
* bad disk-drive,
* leaking capacitors on your motherboard
(do a visual inspection, looking for brown "gunk" on top of a capacitor, and looking for bulging capacitors)
* overheating motherboard
I would recommend Nvidia graphics card. It is one of the best, and compatible with your computer. I would recommend one of the most recent models. Check with your local computer shops and they will assist you in getting a good recent model.
If you can boot into safe mode, then once in safe mode open system restore and then restore to a couple days prior to the install of the hp drivers. This should fix the problem. If you need to know how to get into system restore let me know your operating system (Vista or XP)
