my son recieved a didj for christmas, and kept shutting down after only a few minutes, so we went to toys r us, and exchanged it for another, only to find it did exactly the same thing, so we bought the plug in transformer for it thinking maybe it was a battery problem, but it shut it self down multiple times while plugged into the wall! Obviously these units were not ready for sale due to lack of practical testing, etc..

we are having the same problem. Very frustrating!

  • Anonymous Jan 19, 2009

we have two didj's and both of them are experiencing the same problem. They will boot up but if they are started with a game cartridge inside or as soon as one is inserted it shuts down. these things are a piece of junk.

We have a daughter and a son and they both got a didj. The one for my son did the shutting down thing and we brought it back and the 2nd one did not do it. The other one we replaced and it is still shutting down..... We will try the reset thing and see if that helps.

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2009

There should be a class action suit on Leapster for this piece of ****...all the same problems as above as well as countless hours on the computer trying to "fix"...steaming piece

  • Anonymous Apr 28, 2009

Didj turns off immediately after turning on, no matter putting in new batteries! Tried the reset thing and no help. :(

Also, connecting to Leapfrog connect fails. Didj disconnects itself. Ugh.

We were having the same problem; my son (an we) were getting very frustrated! I finally tried to reboot the game and it seems to have worked. Take a paperclip and bend it; place the point in the small circular opening in the back of the game (there is two arrows next to the opening). We just did this and my son played past the point where it would shut down. The manual said that doing this would erase all of the memory...this didn't seem to happen.

Hope this helps!

This happened to me after trying to tune up my daughter's Didj. I am VERY dissapointed in this product. I cant believe what a mess this Didj is. The Leapster and Leapster2 that my daughters received years ago are hands down better than this brand new Didj they have now. I spent the entire evening after work trying to fix this shutting down thing. With pressure from one daughter to "just fix it Mommy" becasuse the other's had no problem with hers, I finally gave up and the following day called Leap Frog and complained to them how it akes NO sense why it is MANDATORY to tune this thing up, #1..and #2 WHY on earth do you have to download the software TWICE for each child when before it didnt require you to do so, just add another profile. This thing is ridiculous. Once I told the Leap Frog rep (Mary Ann) what was going on, she didnt seem too surprised..which makes me POSSITIVE they have heard of this sort of thing before with the Didjs and wont do anything about it...What she ended up doing was asking me for the number on the inside of the battery compartment so that I can send the game and receive a replacement. All she asked me was wear I purchased it from, which was Walmart around Christmas..this is all the information she required, no receipt. I just went today to the post office, cost me around $4 to send the package priority mail with a delivery confirmation. I mailed it to Leap Frog Enterprises, 563 N. Fairview Street, Santa Ana, Ca. 92703. The phone number is 800-701-5327. PLEASE CALL and complain about your Didj. Ask to speak to a supervisor if you have to. The LEAST that they can do is send you a replacement. Good luck.

My daughter's new Didj just arrived to day UPS. Tommorrow will be a week since I placed the phone call to Leap Frog. Works perfectly!

Today is Dec. 7 2010, and I had the exact problem, with the exact same service as the above when I called the number she listed. As "Valgirl" noted, I was only asked when I purchased the item (I was worried because it was over 7 months ago), where I bought it, and also for the product number inside the battery compartment, not receipt or other info required. More good news: I WON'T NEED TO SHIP IT BACK TO LEAPFROG! They will be sending me an email with a special number in it, that I need to write with permanent marker onto our old Didj, take a picture, and email the photo back to Leapfrog. The item is supposed to be received in 10 to 15 business days. If all this doesn't come about, I'll leave a reply later. No reply means it all worked out great. One more thing, I asked if the old problem has been resolved in the Didj that she is sending out, and I believe she did mention in her reply (customer service from India :( ) that this is a new, functioning and "Improved" Didj. Hoping..... Good luck to you all.

I have a mac and a leapfrog didj

Hey Jackiedonder!
I, too, have a mac and I've been having the same problem. In fact, I thought we had a faulty Didj, and I broke down and bought a second one. The second one is having the same issue. Unfortunately, Leapfrog doesn't address this issue online, and their customer service is only available on Monday from 9:00 -5:00 and Friday from 9:00 - 3:00. Seriously? I can't sit at work on the phone, trying to solve the problems with my child's game. I'm extremely disappointed with this product, and with the availability of help. It's turned out to be a big fat pain in the $@!. If you still have your receipt, I'd return it as fast as you can. Nintendo DS, anyone?

Didj needs a tuneup! Bet when I plugged it in to the computer with usb it installed on the computer but the Didj never goes off downloading in progress. Ive tried on two diffrent computers and cant figure...

I bought my 2 for my grandsons for Christmas and both had the same problem. I Googled LeapFrog Connect and downloaded it. After you download it, plug the unit up to your PC with the USB cable that came with it. When you start LF Connect, it will tell you that there is an update for your Didj. Follow the prompts and you should not have any problems.

I had the same problem. What you need to do is open the Leapfrog connect and then plug your DIDJ into the computer. You also need to plug it in with the AC adapter as this takes time and the first time I tried the batteries died. So plug it in or put new batteries in it. Now just leave it sit plugged into your computer with the Leapfrog connect program open. It took mine almost 2 hours just sitting on the white Warning screen then if finally connected and updated the software and is now working fine. Hope this helps.

Can not get a game to play

I just got the Sonic game to play again. Unfortunately, I had to reset the Didj--i.e., erase all the contents, including "Jet Pack Heroes" and my son's profile. Basically, I had to reset it to factory settings.

So all the stuff we worked on is lost, but at least he can play Sonic.

I got the instructions here:

And here are the instructions:

"Launch LeapFrog Connect
  1. Press the "Ctrl + Shift + R" keys on the keyboard
  2. A window will open that will say "connect the device you would like to reset"
  3. Connect the Didj and turn it on
  4. This will reset the Didj to the factory settings"
It didn't work exactly like this, but that's the command you want to use to reset it when connected to the computer via USB. You'll know when it's resetting--it takes a good 5-10 minutes and very clearly tells you that you're resetting.

Hope this helps!

My son's leapfrog didj will not turn on at all. I've tried putting brand new batteries in it, and I get nothing.

This happened with the first Didj we bought. Struggled to open the battery case with the stupid recommended dime. [Use a screwdriver instead - better able to push down the lever inside the case.] The 1st Didj never turned on. Totally dead. Exchanged it. The second Didj was easier to open compartment to install batteries and turned on immediately. Reommend you take it back.

Problem with didj

QUICK Summary:
- Download and install "Leapfrog Connect" manually.
- Wipe/reset your DIDJ (maybe...)
- Install the free game.

LONG Summary:
Like most people here on the forums and question boards, the didj hung or failed to download the update: "Download failed. Please try again."
I found that the .EXE from the CD, created a folder in the C drive "C:\Program Files\LeapFrog\log", where the file name was "Sniffer_*date*_*time*.log" Example: Sniffer_090102_1916.log
In this log file, there were two references to the remote files it had to download (in the display window, it says 101 Mb. So the two files below add up to about that much): (78Mbs) (25 Mbs)
The DidjPlugin.exe is the "Leapfrog Connect" installer, while "UPCInstaller.exe" is the free Jetpack Heroes game.

I cancelled the hung or timed out program launched from the CD, rebooted the PC, and then proceeded to download these two files manually.
After downloading these two files, I double-clicked each one. There was no dialog box or confirmation or license agreement page, destination folder, etc, etc, etc. This was a 'silent' installation, with
no prompts (save for the Windows security prompt: "Are you sure you want to run ...exe?"
I then proceeded to wipe the handheld (because it was stuck on "Downloading Update, please wait...).

Launch Leapfrog Connect:
1) Press the "Ctrl + Shift + R" keys in sequence and hold them down.
2) This should open a window that says "Connect the device you would like to reset".
3) Connect the Didj.
4) Eject the Didj when done.
5) Recreate your player profiles on the Didj and connect again.

I could be wrong, but wiping the didj did not erase the free game. I don't remember, but there was a point to sync the didj and then the game was there... Anyways...
After restarting the didj and creating a new profile, connecting to Leapfrog Connect, the didj should be good to go.

I do have a couple questions:
Why only have a small 5Mb self-extracting installer on the CD? Why not include the larger (75-78Mb) "Leapfrog Connect" on the CD?
Why not have the free game ALREADY installed on the didj? That way, when it comes out of the box brand new, you get to start playing right away...
