Hi I currently use the DFI PE21-EL motherboard with a 400mhz FSB and am looking to upgrade the cpu. I am currently running a 1.7ghz intel celeron cpu. The website http://www.firingsquad.com/hw/268/DFI_PE21-EL/ says that the mobo supports up to a 2.4ghz Pentium 4 with the 400mhz FSB. However the website http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-DFI/PE21-EL.html says that the mobo will support up to a 2.6ghz pentium 4 with the 400mhz FSB. The DFI website has no information on this mobo anymore.
My questions are these:
-What is the fastest pentium 4 cpu that I can use in my 400mhz FSB mobo?
-If it is in-fact the 2.6 cpu that is the fastest, do I need a driver or BIOS update to do this, and if so where can I find this driver or BIOS update.
-On some mobo's there is a jumper you can switch to change the FSB, does my mobo with the 400mhz fsb have the ability to be switched over to 533mhz FSB?
-Lastly, does anyone have access to the owners manual for this mobo, and if so could I get a copy of it, preferably in digital so there's no mail/shipping involved.
Thank you for your time, it is much appreciated. Please let me know if there is anymore information you need from me.
Merry Christmas and thanks again.
-Jared Hicks
Your motherboard supports 2 different fsb's.
look these up @ cpu-world
you can use:
Intel Pentium 4 processor (478-pin)
- 533MHz system data bus - supports up to 2.8 GHz
- 400MHz system data bus - supports up to 2.4 GHz
Intel Celeron processor
- 400MHz system data bus - supports up to 2.0 GHz CPU speed
and here are the suppoted cpus:

here is the link to the manufacturer specs, downloads ,cpu support.
I believe that it will support the 2.8 northwood but I can't say for certain.Myself if I were in your shoes I would go for it.
Here is the one that I would go for
Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8 FSB :533MHz
Hope it helps

Thanks for the help.
To make my intentions short and sweet, I want to put the fastest cpu I can in the mobo, can I go any higher than the 1.9 P4 @ 400fsb?
could I get the" 2.8 GHz
21 x 533 MHz, Northwood
A
1.525V not supported" and drop it below 1.525v? or does it just not
work that way? (the reason I ask is because I currently have that cpu,
it just didn't work in my computer, I figured it was the FSB that was
off)
Thank you again.
Its funny that you just mentioned that because I just stumbled across the same information a few minutes ago. Thanks! I'm going to order the 2.53 and see what happens. I guess I'll update you in a few days or so.
Thanks again.
Alright, well just to add a little more to the plot:
I took a look at the 2.8ghz processor I was sent, and on it there is an identifying code that reads :SL7E2. I looked that up at CPU-World and got this page:http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL7E2....
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-DFI/PE21-E... shows the compatible cpu's for my mobo, and when I click on the link for the 2.8 this is where it leads:http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/...
Nowhere under that page lists SL7E2
That 2.8 I have is different from the ones listed as compatible with my mobo.
So now that I know this, is there still a chance that the 2.8 will work if I get one with the correct code, it should it not matter either way? Or if you could just take a look at the new information given and lend me your thoughts it would be much appreciated.
Thanks again, and please let me know if that did not make sense and I will do my best to clarify.
Well I wish there was an edit button but there is not.
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium_4/... shows the other processors that are like the SL7E2 that I have. Turns out that I have a Prescott CPU, but my mobo needs a Northwood. So I'm guess that I've now answered my own question, and that the 2.8 Northwood should work?
Thanks
