Smoke started to come out of top of RX-V490 receiver, and now sounds a little more distorted than usual. Is the receiver salvagable, I know I triggered the protection circuit, but will it keep happening? I...

It all depends how much the amplifier circuit was damaged and how much you now push the system. It could be worth opening the unit and checking for any obvious damaged to components before you go any further.

As you've stated you want to run 4 speakers I take it you're not using the full 5.1 System.

If this is the case then the best/easiest option for running 2 sets of speakers is to get 2 Pairs of 4 Ohm Speakers and just connect them in Parallel to the Front Output which is rated at 70W + 70W (8Ohms).

If you need any further assistance of clarification just ask.

Can I use an Ipod Dock with a Yamaha RX V490 receiver?

No, but you could still access the audio directly from the iPod...

Anything that has a headphone output can be adapted to feed an RCA cable pair for standard stereo to an amp or receiver. Get a cable like the one described here:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2

and connect it into any available analog input EXCEPT "Phono". Turn the MP3 player volume up.

Monitor problem

I don't see any OSD in the RX-V490 owner's manual. This unit only passes video through from a video source, like a VCR.

Yamaha RX V490 Turning itself Off

The amp is in protect mode which means that the output section has a problem. With nothing connected, there are defective parts inside the unit. This type of problem is not likely to have been caused by any shipping damage. I would guess that the output transistors are shorted.
