Exact same problem on my wife's VGN-S460. Notebook is still in perfect shape otherwise. It would be a shame to waste.

The fan is screwed together with the motherboard, the only way i figured is to separate it is completely unscrew the motherboard, cd drives.....then unscrew the fan from the bottom side of the motherboard....

i took the fan out just today, wantted to add some lubricating oil to it, but then can't manage to separate the blades & expose the centre

how much did the replacement fan cost? i am in canada, not even sure sony stores here have it.

Fan grinding sound

Fan grinding sound usually comes from the fan that sits atop of the CPU. Get the CPU fan replaced cause the bearings are going bad.

Sony vaio fan is making a grinding noise, how can i fix this?

The sony VGN-S460 seems to have an inherent problem with their cpu fans. It is apparent that the fan uses a ball bearing system which over time becomes worn and causes the grinding sound.

The only solution is to replace the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable.

Fan of VAIO CS-118E makes loud sounds

That is definitely a problem from the fan. What you can do is to call sony and check if they still cover Fan replacement for this specific mode.

I have the same problem for Sony VGN-S460 heatsink fan problem

I trust that you have purchased the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable from the heatsink. You must disassemble the entire laptop in order to remove the fan assembly. they are two screws that are below the motherboard that must be remove in order for the fan assembly to come apart.
If you cannot achieve this yourself, or lack confidence in your ability to rebuild the unit after, you can send the unit to us at www.cowetacomputerstore.com and we will accomplish the desired outcome. We have worked on this system resolving this very issue.

then if that is the problem to your pc then turn your pc upside down and dissassemled the screw at the back then your keyboard should be lift up slightly and if you can not do that on your own try to contact someone in that field to help you but just for you to tell the person that you know what is wrong w2ith the pc the person should try and check if there is anything too close to the fan that the fan is touching and if there is nothing the fan is touching and the noise continue then change the fan with a new one. bye any question again.
