How to connect Netflix Roku player with pc and tv

Hi,

Must the Roku player be near the TV? I don't want to have wires everywhere.

    Thanks for the help !

Can you be more specific re: the wireless router? I have to cover 40'. Is there a preferred one to cover that distance?

    tx

Yes, I have broadband, only one PC. I have only a wired one, will pick up a Netgear wireless. Thank you *very much.*

    Hi again,

A follow-up to advice given here:

I have found two Netgear WGR614s: one is in a white box, the other, a yellow (and presumably a later model, v.6). There is a note on the front of the yellow box, "5 times faster than 802.11" which, I believe, describes the content of the white box.

Also, the yellow box indicates 'G', not sure I'm seeing that on the white box. Is there an appreciable difference? Should I choose one over the other or is it irrelevant?

    Thanks in advance,
    -h

Yes, it connects directly to your TV with a choice of cables - check their site for a description of your options there.  And if you have a wireless network (router) it will connect to the internet through that, so you don't need to have a cable running back to where your computer is.

You have broadband internet service at this point, right?  Is it hooked up to more than one computer or does the wire just go straight from the modem into your computer?

I'm just trying to make sure that you know what I mean about a router, since you may have one already.  All you need is an inexpensive router that runs wireless G.  Something from Netgear for example - you can pick up a WGR614 at bestbuy for $45, less if ordered online. Should be perfectly adequate.

But you do need to have high speed internet (broadband) service already, and if you're sharing that among more than one computer you might even have a wireless router already.

You're welcome - and by the way, that's the router I've used for quite some time now and it's been rock solid, works great.  There are newer models out there of course, but I don't think you'll gain anything with the Roku by spending more.  Just make sure to enable the wireless security unless you don't mind neighbors using your internet!

Either one will be fine - if there's a price difference get the cheaper one.  If they're the same, get the v6.  I just checked out the specs on what that means, and it will have no effect on the roku player.

Trying to hook up roku wireless player, need pass word?

You want to try the Roku player so you can stream NetFlix to your TV over your home internet connection. It can be a bit of a hair pulling experience to set one up. So I'll try and make it as easy as it can be. First; Once you receive your player, and connect it to your TV. You need to get your new player on to your home network, be sure you have a router with wireless capability's. You will need to know the name of your home network, and you will need to know your WEB key or the pass key to secure your access into your home network. To do this, go to "Settings" (on the Roku menu) then scroll thru the menu until you see "Network", press network, look for your home network and press on it, then put in the WEB key to access your home network router. Remember after each step unplug the Roku for 10 to 20 seconds to set the memory.(may take more than 1 time with some players) NEXT; Go to Roku's internet site and set up your account with them, they will need info on how to bill you if need be. So they will need some bank account info Or you can use PayPal. They need this info in case you order a pay for movie or swap to a paid channel. Next On the Roku "My Account" page, down at the right bottom of the page you will see the "Link Player" button, follow this to receive your Link code, write this code down and go to your TV, Roku menu screen and put in the Link Code. This will now activate your new Roku player. Next you will want to go to NetFlix and set up an account with them. Same thing here, they need bank account info to bill you, if you stay past the free demo time limit. Now go back to your TV, Roku menu and scroll thru the menu to press on NetFlix, here you will go thru the Menu to get another link code. This time it will come on the TV, Roku menu to go back and put that code in your NetFlix account to activate your Roku player with NetFlix. Now in the process of all this you may have to unplug your Roku player after each link code to set it into memory. This causes a lot of folks trouble as they do not, "Turn Off" the Roku after they put in the network key, the Roku link code, then again after they put in the NetFlix link code. One last bit of help. Do not create a large Instant Queue on your NetFlix account. This causes problems with the memory usage in the Roku player, and It can keep NetFlix from loading.
