as it turned out, the lever under the hood by the steering wheel that controls the blade position is faulty and I have to hold in the button so that the machine thinks the blade is in the safety position in order to start the engine. Thank you all for your help!

Sounds like one of your safety switches might be engaged. Check to make sure that the PTO is off, the parking brake is set and you are in the seat. After that report further if still having issues. May also have a blown fuse or a broken/loose wire.

also try wiggling the transmission to ensure it's properly in neutral.

SOURCE: John Deere 318 won't start. Replaced starter/alternator.

I don't think it's electrical. The starter gear gets jammed against the teeth on the flywheel. Try tapping the edge of the gear with a drift of some kind then try starting again. It won't solve the problem long term, but it will save you spending time troubleshooting an electrical problme that doesn't exist.

X595 john deere mower, turn key, dash board lights dim. circuit board clicks or buzzes. battery is good, wires in tact, no visible damage or hot spots

Check the battery negative cable at the point where it bonds to engine and frame. Typically it is stacked with another ground wire on an engine mounting bolt. Check all engine mounting bolts for sufficient torque.

My Z trac john deere mower will not start. You turn the key and it just make a clicking sound.

Check the battery. If you have left it out with key on they go dead. Mower battery are not known to last more than 2 years.

I have a John Deere LT115. Lights work when ignition switch is turned but starter does not ingage. Removed diode and replaced it with a jumper wire and engine starts. Will a jumper harm this circuit?

yes. the diode is what keeps it from sending to much volt to and from the battery. if you jump it now if anything happens to the stat-tor it will go through the system not protected. i don't know a lot about them but was told by several shops to not bypass them.

John Deere LA140 won't turn. New battery. No sound when I turn the key. No headlights, what should I do?

Check your connections at the battery. May have a bad ground or bad battery connection. Also check to make sure new battery is good by supplementing with a jump start. If new battery is good and connections are solid, you most likely have a broken wire somewhere. The lights may only work with the mower running though. I believe on my LA105 the lights only come on with the engine running and dim/brighten with the RPM of the engine.
