Anyone know how to enable a microphone on Dell

I would try going to Start, Accessories, Entertainment, and opening the Sound Recorder. Try doing a test record and see if it moves, or plays back what you record. If not, click on Edit at the top of the sound recorder, and go down to audio properties. You should see a sound recording section in the middle. Click volume, make sure microphone is selected, and the volume is up. If this doesn't fix it, try reloading your audio driver for your model of computer. You can download dell drivers from support.dell.com

I have a dell xps 400 with front and rear

Start by going to Dell's website www.dell.com & enter your service tag under support, drivers & downloads. Window's update is just general listing & it doesn't know what driver you have, except that it didn't match thier data. Truthfully, thier data sucks & should only be used if the actual drivers from the manufacture are not available. I just looked up your model & there's 3 possible drivers. You may have the Creative Labs audio, in which case the driver you have is wrong. You can also go to www.pcpitstop.com & run a scan & at the end click on the "drivers" tab & it will show you if there's a driver issue & what revision you should have. Sometimes you have to go to the chip maker's site for the latest releases. Also, try a different mic if you can too.

Internal microphone not working

I have Dell Inspiron 1520 and I have issue to built in microphone is not working. I tried to execute the Sigma Tel driver from Dell Driver and Support website but prompted 'Exit Error; Error : Device Object not present, Restart system and run setup. Then, asked Dell support to help and they are not really helpful, after System Restore and drivers upload and finally asked to reformat the laptop........

Anyway, this is what works for me.

1) Download the Sigma Tel driver from Dell Support Drivers page and save it in Desktop
2) Shutdown your computer
3) Start your computer and press F8 at the Dell Logo page
4) Select Safe Mode (not others)
5) Proceed to work on Safe Mode
6) Right-click the Sound icon and activate the Sound icon
7) Select Recording device.
8) If still not working, then execute the Sigma Tel driver that saved in desktop

then, shutdown the computer and start as normal, you may see the system able to detect the built in Microphone then.

Hope it will work the same for you too..!!

My Dell XPS M1330's internal speakers are not working, the audio utility claims that it is producing sound. I am running windows vista, and the sigma tel audio codec is my sound driver.

#1 Flash the BIOS to the most current version. #2 Run diagnostics from the F12 menu (Or Power plus FN key) see if the speakers work in the diagnostic. If they work in diags, there is no hardware issue, only a software issue. If you get no sound in diags, try a pair of headphones, if you still get no sound, then it is a hardware problem. If you only get sound in the headphones, then the microswitch that disables the speakers is stuck. #3 is sound works in diags then you have a problem with the audio driver or speaker configuration (Audio muted etc)
