Lionel Trainmaster KW 190 Watt Transformer

The connecting posts on the back side of the transformer are loose, causing the transformer not to work. I can tighten a couple of them, but the C and D posts are very loose. I can't seem to tighten them or find a way to open the transformer case to trouble shoot inside. Can anyone help with this issue?

The Lionel postwar 190watt transformer is an excellent power supply for trains. If one or more of the binding posts are loose ("U,A,B,C,D" Terminals") you will need to replace the binding post, use a T-159 replacement Binding Post. The original posts are soldered and crimped on.
The T-159 replacement binding post is bolted on. UNPLUG THE TRANSFORMER Carefully pull/pry up the handles and remove them remove the 4 Philips screws on the top, lift off the case top, the binding posts stay with the body of the KW.
Remove the loose bindings post one at a time as needed. Be sure to get any wire reattached. Reverse the procedure to reassemble.

SOURCE: Lionel train power issue

Answer a number of questions:
Is the tranformer power adequate for the train and is it a working tranformer?
Will the train run by connecting the wires directly to the two points of the train (wheels and center rail connector)?
Are the tracks new?
Is the lockon new?

SOURCE: We have a Lionel 80-watt

This transformer is difficult to open unless you have the triangular security screw driver. Security bits can be purchased at any Harbor Freight tool store but you will need to adapt them to fit into the channels where the screws are recessed. Click on the link below to view the correct tool needed to correctly open this unit up:

SOURCE: New Lionel Polar Express train set-up issue. The

My son just got this train and we are having the same problem. Taking the last car off solved the problem for us. I think it has something to do with accessories and the transformer voltage output (See page 14 and 15 of the instructions).

I have still not determined why it won't run with the final car but am assuming it has something to do with the lights on the cars pulling too many amps and not enough left to run the train. I will let you know if I find a solution. If anyone else knows how to solve the issue, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Can two tracks be powered with the Lionel Trainmaster R 100 Watt transformer?

Track 1 as you have it connected is terminals B-F. The second track would be terminals B-C. Connect post B to the outer rails Terminal 1 ? on your lockon. THis will give you 6-16 volts at the track.

Many of the MTH Protosounds 1 and 2 and Trainmaster will not work with the Lionel CW-80 electronic power source. The output waveform is so non-like sinusoidal. The electronic sound systems will not usually respond to this waveform and when they do, the sound will be garbled. Use another power source.

Is lionel 40 watt transformer from toy train enough power to run a dual motor larger train engine it just lites up and sputters

It would depend on what engine you're trying to run. The 40 watt transformer's circuit breaker will trip off if you put too large of an electrical load on it. If the engine light stays on while it sputters, the track or the engine's motor and electrical pick-ups may need cleaning. Older engines that haven't been run for a while can get stiff. Your engine may need some lubrication.

It sounds as though you may have two defective transformers. Lionel has reported problems with some of their smaller transformers. I would have the transformers and the engines checked by a Lionel service station or contact their customer service department for help.

I have two vintage Lionel ZW Transformers and both work just fine except the left side lights on the throtle control do not light. Anyone have a tip. Thanks Carl

The green light on the right side is a power light, and is on whenever there is AC power connected to the cord. The red light on the left is a short circuit indicator, and comes on when the center rail is grounded to the outside rail by any number of reasons, usually a derailed car, or wiring problem. Check photos on ebay to see what the red and green lenses look like of they are missing. There is a 40-50 year old circuit breaker that should pop during a short circuit, if the breaker is still working properly. If you want to test it, just lay a screwdriver between the center and outside rails until the left light comes on, but don't let it go too long, it could get hot and cause a fire. If it does not pop, you need to get it serviced.
