Remove the battery and AC Adapter cord, and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then, without replacing the battery try plugging in your AC Adapter to see if you get any love. If that doesn't work, remove the AC adapter, reset the board again, and this time hold the power button down as you plug in the AC Adapter cord. If you still don't get any lights, you could try removing your memory, reset the board, replace the memory, plug in the AC Adapter, and try one more time.

Fault finding

What! !O_O!

For a statement, such as, "Motherboard not on", you would be stating the motherboard either does not receive power, or the motherboard does not use the received power.

Primer:
You press the Power On button. The first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset. The Basic Input/Output System program is initialized.

BIOS looks to see what devices are connected, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor (CPU) on; and hands the computer over to the Operating System. (In this case a version of Microsoft Windows)

If the statement is the motherboard is not turning on, you are in effect stating the BIOS chipset is Not receiving power.

Diagnoses must start from the AC adapter (Charger) You need to know if the AC adapter is putting out the correct Voltage. Also while testing have an assistant, gently wiggle the cable FROM AC adapter TO laptop; and power cord TO AC adapter. Any fluctuation in the reading, means a broken wire.

AC adapter proves to be good, the diagnoses goes to the DC Power Jack. The DC Power Jack is the jack on the laptop, that the AC adapter plugs into. (DC_IN)

AC adapter removed, Battery removed; a small instrument is used to see if you can gently move the DC Power Jack. ANY perceptible movement means a bad DC Power Jack -> Replace.

DC Power Jack checks out OK, then the problem will most likely be the Power MOSFET's on the motherboard. They determine if the Battery is to receive a trickle charge, or full charge. Also determines if the laptop is to run off of the Battery, or just the AC adapter.

Using the HP Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's; as an example,

I can give a lot more, than the generic information above, if I had the Model Number of the Acer laptop. This is on the Bottom of the laptop. Post back in a Comment.

Plugged in and not charging

1) Use a multimeter, check the AC adapter (Charger) for power.
Make sure it is putting out the required voltage.

Have an assistant gently wiggle the cable FROM AC adapter TO laptop. See if there is an intermittent reading on the multimeter.

Have an assistant gently wiggle the power cord.

An intermittent reading on the multimeter indicates a broken wire.
Power cord is bad? Replace cord.
Cable from AC adapter to laptop is bad? Replace AC adapter.

If you have posted the laptop manufacturer NAME and MODEL NUMBER, I could have given you more than generic information.

Model Number is in the Bottom of the laptop. Post back in a Comment.

AC adapter works OK?

Check the DC Power Jack.
The DC Power Jack is the jack on the laptop, that the AC adapter plugs into.

DC Power Jack checks OK, this is your problem,

My toshiba satellite l35 wont turn on,,,the light blinks then shuts off ,,,thats all it does

You may have a DC connector problem:

Symptoms of a broken power jack
1. If you wiggle the power cord or the AC Adapter connector on the back of the laptop, the power LED and battery charge LED start to flicker.
2. Battery will not charge in the laptop.
3. Laptop runs fine off a charged battery.
4. With the AC Adapter connected the laptop appears to be dead.
No power LED or battery charge LED activity.
5. Laptop randomly powers off without any warning.

If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix the problem by re-soldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it

I got a compaq c36 it was working fine but now it wont switch on or anything do you now what it could be

1. Plug the laptop into AC power.

2. Take out the battery.

3. Try a different outlet.

4. Look for the light that indicates that the AC adapter is plugged in. If that light isn't on, try plugging and unplugging the AC power jack and moving it around until the light shows its connected. If no light comes on, its possible you have a bad DC jack or the AC adapter needs to be replaced.

5. If the indicator light is on and the laptop won't power on, then it's possible you have a bad switch board or stuck button. Make sure no buttons are stuck. Conversely, push hard on the power button and move it around in order to make sure you're making good contact.

6. If you know the battery has a charge, unplug the AC adapter and connect the battery. If it turns on, then you can be sure you have a bad DC jack or a bad AC adapter.

I have ac adapter plugged into the wall, and into the computer, the charge pack light is green, the battery is in the computer and the computer won't turn on at all

You probably have a bad or loose DC jack on the laptop:

Problem symptoms:

  1. Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  2. Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wiggle the power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  3. The battery will not get charged.
  4. When you plug AC adapter, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).

Advent N270 netbook will not charge. Orange light comes on initially then goes off. Also when I wiggle the plug into the laptop the light flashes on and intermittently.

It sounds like either a bad connection on the motherboard or a broken wire in the adapter making intermittent connection.

1. With the power adapter disconnected, do you have a power light? This would indicate the adapter is good and the plug is questionable.

2. Check your power adapter output with a multi-meter.(be sure to wiggle the wires around) If the power fluctuates, replace the plug.

3. If the power is solid, replace the motherboard connector.

Laptop won't power on with ac adapter or battery

Could be a combination of things.

1) Battery is low. Not enough power to turn the laptop on.
Caused by;

2) AC adapter has a plug on the end of the cable. The plug plugs into a DC Power Jack on the laptop.

The DC Power Jack is bad.

2a) The DC Power Jack has a bad connection to the motherboard, (Cracked solder joints), and/or the jack itself is bad.

2b) Center Pin is loose in the jack's mount.
The back of the Center Pin where it mounts has become loose.

2c) The plastic body of the jack, which composes the jack's case, is cracked. This allows movement of the Center Pin.

2b, and 2c cause a bad connection with the AC adapter plug.

No charge to the Battery, no power to the laptop.

http://www.laptopjacks.com/view_part/For-Gateway-MX6920-DC-Power-Jack-GW51425.html

[ If this is the case the DC Power Jack needs to be resoldered to the motherboard. The cracked solder joints need to be re-melted, (Reflowed)
Entire laptop needs to be disassembled down to the bare motherboard in your hand.
(No Processor, Ram Memory, or any adapter cards mounted to the motherboard. Nada)

OR,
The DC Power jack needs to be replaced.
This entails disassembling the entire laptop, down to just the motherboard in your hand. (Same as above)

The old DC Power Jack is de-soldered, and a new one soldered in place.

Very FEW computer repair shops have the necessary skill level.
They just want to replace the entire motherboard.
IF one is available.
More Ka-Ching for them also. ]

3) The AC adapter is bad.
Not providing power to the laptop, to charge the Battery, nor give power to the laptop without the Battery.

AC adapter cord from adapter to plug, which plugs into the laptop, (DC Power Jack), may have a break in it.

May be an intermittent contact provided by wiggling the cord.
If this is the case the wires have stretched, and broken.
Wiggling causes the wires to briefly touch, and make contact.

Where this cord meets the plug itself. A lot of times there is a break in the wires in this area.

Solution is to replace the AC adapter. There are universal AC adapters you can buy, or perhaps Gateway still has some for sale.

Hi,
Remove your battery, optical drive and reseat your memory. If you still have no power it sounds like either the ac-adapter or the dc jack (plug).
Try another ac-adapter if you can and see what happens. If there is still no power, I would say your DC jack needs to be serviced or replaced.
