Sony KP-51HW40 rear projection TV - green screen then no picture
When the TV is turned on I get a green screen with thin horizontal lines. This lasts for about 5 seconds then the screen turns black. The TV is still on with audio, just no picture. I just need to know whether this is worth repairing. The TV is 7 years old and if the repair could cost more than $500 I just don't think it would be worth repairing. Thanks for your advice.

I have the same problem. The tv repair man told me to get a new tv because it is the tubes and they are expensive. Should I listen or can it be fixed without the high cost.I have the same problem. Don't waste your time - go out and get another TV. Chaulk it up to that we have all been scamed by SONY. They knew about the problem, did not choose to make things right. They have become the Fat Cat with the attitude that no one can hurt them. We need to show them that they are wrong and boycot their products. That is the only recourse we have.
or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp. the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.
This sounds like you may have bad picture tubes. Most likely the green and red tubes. You would have to have them replaced and realigned. I would call a Sony ASC and get an estimate to verify this. An onsite service call could verify if this is what's causing your problem.
Yes you have bad green and red crt but with an adjustment you can still use it. remove the front panel and you'll see the focus pack (it;s a black piece with 6 rotating knobs on it. Adjust clock otherwise the red and green screen (the bottom line knobs) till the lines has gone. The better way to check it is to adujt in video input with no signal, just black screen.
without seeing a picture I can guess that you may have a shorted green crt or the drive going to it has changed and you may need to turn down the g2 control for the green. If the tube is shorted or bad see what type of warrantee you have on the crts as some sets have two to 5 years. Good Luck
