1. look on ebay for battery if anybody would sell one.
2. go to walmart look in the flash drive isle for a sandisk ultra 2 cf card 8gb about 40$ .
3. open the rio and take out the old hard drive and then find a pc to format the cf card with a cf card reader make sure to format with windows 7 in my computer and choose quick format select default allocation size and then hit start.
4. when succesfully formatted put cf drive in rio carbon.
5. then put back plate back on carbon.
6. then look here for rio carbon developers firmware
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rio_Carbon
7. go to bottom of wikipedia page and click 3.04 Download link 1 and download the exe program and then run as administrater load up the firmware and then walla you have a working mp3 player again.

Try re-formatting your Rio

On windows just right click on it and click format.

This will remove any tricky tracks that just don't want to go away...

You will have broken your hard drive...

Try replacing it with a CF card...

Everybody says that this does not work but it definitely does!

My Rio got dropped and I completely buggered the hard drive so after reading many forums saying that it didn't work I read one that said that someone had told them that sandisk ultra II ones worked (very vague!)

Because I had nothing to lose I went out and bought a 1GB sandisk Ultra II CF card. I then took apart my rio and replaced the hard drive with the CF card. Still not thinking it was going to work I plugged it into my computer and installed the latest firmware (from the rio website) and then HEY PRESTO!!!!!! it works.

I have yet to try an 8GB ultra II card but when I do i will keep you posted.

If you don't believe me then I don't blame you but If you send me a request then I can send you pictures and more details...

Rio will live on

Hope this helps

SOURCE: i cant delete file on the rio carbon

Scan for virus, then eject and reinsert it, refresh page over and over again. and try to delete, if it refuses, then you've got to format it.

Rio Carbon 5 GB: Battery loses power fast when player is turned off

The battery is not normally something that wears out on a Rio Carbon but if it used and charged wrong then it can either be conditioned to a shorter time or wrecked. Because it goes flat when turned off but keeps charge when on makes me slightly confused but anyway... I would advise charging it up fully and then flatten it fully - just leave it playing while you're out or something. Do this a few times and this may solve your problem. This will put maximum charge into your battery and it might solve your problem. If not then try taking the back off and look for a short circuit or obvious hardware fault.

Hope this helps,

EIO Carbon Pearl 5gb

Go to this part of the Rio website, and get the Plays for sure firmware update - even if you don't transfer any WMA files, this will help you get around the Windows Media Player 11 compatibility issue:

(WARNING: make sure the player is fully charged before doing this, or your player will be permanently lost)

RIO Carbon

Here's a guide for you - sorry but i don't have any photos. If you look in the tips and tricks section for this product then I have previously posted a number of things that may help some of you. If not then send me a request and I will try to sort your problem out.

How to disassemble a Rio Carbon:

  • First take off the front plate (you may want to warm it up, not fry it, with a hairdryer to make the removal easier.
  • Then you will see near the bottom there are two holes which if you get a very small screwdriver then you can unclip 2 of the clips holding the back plate on.
  • Then pry your screwdriver between the back of your rio and the rubber and lever the back off slightly (you may want to get a cocktail stick/match stick etc. to keep this open) then on each side you should see two more metal clips holding the back plate on. Lever each of these clips and the back plate should pop off - don't force it or you might break the plastic.
  • Then you will be able to see the hard drive and the battery below it.
How to remove the hard drive:

  • Make sure your player is turned off and not plugged in.
  • Then carefully lift the drive out of its cradle/holder. It will be attached by a ribbon cable to the main circuit board.
  • At the bottom of the hard drive carefully lever the connector off the drive, make sure you do it evenly so as not to bend the pins if you want to be able to use it afterwards.
  • You will then be have a 5GB Microdrive and a Rio carbon shell.
  • You can then connect up your CF card or new Microdrive.
  • If connecting a compact flash card then you may want to put a bit of foam on top of it to stop it rattling in the case because it is slightly thinner than a Microdrive
Hope this helps you not to break your Rio even more when trying to fix it!

Broke volume dial

http://www.content-type.com/1461305906/carbon+3.04.EXE.htm This link takes you to a site which will allow you to download an upgrade to your carbon's software which includes a volume option in the settings menu. My wheel broke a while ago too, and I bought a new player before I found this link. I still think this is the most compact and portable 5gb player on the market. I'm back to using it now.
