In order to receive a yellow belt, one needs to know how to perform the basic strikes, kicks, and blocks of karate. It should be noted that different programs ask for different moves. Typically, the student must know how to perform (not master) moves like reverse punch, vertical punch, wheel kick, and elbow strike. In addition to the basic moves, students are asked to perform one kata, to demonstrate some or all of the karate stances, and take a written or verbal test regarding the rules of karate.
Many styles of martial arts use a belt ranking system;
however they may not all equate to the same skill level. Here are a few styles and their ranking
order:
Karate - white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black
Tae Kwon Do - white, yellow, green, blue, red and black
Judo - only uses white, brown, red and black
Kung Fu - no established belt ranking system
