Photos taken with canon 5d with both raw & jpeg formats. When I open Adobe bridge the photos are displayed as _mg_0133.cr2 and _mg_0133.jpeg. The jpegs can be viewed and opened, but I can't open the cr2 photos in adobe bridge & cs3. This problem just began. I could previuosly view & open cr2 files. I have tried to change preferences to solve the problem. HELP! Thank you.

MikeH999, Thank you for the reply. Adobe help said to upgrade to CS4, which I have done. The problem persists in CS4. I have requested a fix from Canon. I am not sure how to use the RAW converter that can with my camera. I loaded the the Canon software that came with the camera & I can view the images with it. Forgive my ignorance, but are you saying that I should open the images with the Canon Software and then convert/save the file as DNG? Again, thank you for the help. DFT

If you have the 5D Mark II (the latest version,) the raw converter in Photoshop CS3 does not support the format. If you have the earlier version of lthe 5D, download the latest raw converter update from Adobe (free}

If you have the Mark II you can do one of three things to continue using Photoshop:

1. Upgrade to CS4. The latest update for it's raw converter supports the 5D Mark II.

2. Download the Adobe DNG Converter when 5.2 version becomes available and convert your cr2 files to the DNG format which CS3 can read. In the past this has been available as a free download form Adobe, but it's not currently on their site.

3. Use the raw converter that came with your camera.

You may have to go to the Adobe web site to download the latest version of the raw converter (it is 5.2 and is a free upgrade for CS4.) It was available on November 25, and if your version of CS4 packaged before then, it would not be included.

With respect to conversion to DNG (Digital Negative Format) the converter is available from Adobe, not Canon.

    I Hope this helps.

SOURCE: can't open img prefix cr2 suffex files with abobe bridge or cs3

Hi there,
You say the problem only just began. What has happened to Photoshop in between it working and not, ie, any upgrades, updates, installs, etc? This will no doubt reveal the answer to your conundrum. Get PS to check for updates then do them all, especially any referencing Camera RAW updates.

The next thing you will want to check is that the image files are ok. Download the latest Canon image viewer from here. You can also download the drivers directly from the canon site. Just click the link at the bottom of the page.

All the best

CR2 files are created when you shoot RAW files. Your computer cannot read them without a Canon RAW plugin in whatever image processing software you're using.

Your camera can be set to record in JPEG, RAW or JPEG and RAW.

If you wish to know more about RAW files and their uses, then click here.

I hope this has helped you, if not then please add a comment to explain what additional information you'd like regarding this problem but otherwise please take a moment to rate my answer.

Importing Images

The CR2 suffix means that the picture was taken in the RAW file format, a proprietary format. This requires that the images be processed by a software conversion to be 'readable' by the computer. The EOS Utility software that came with the camera will work, as well as a number of third-party software packages. GOOGLE "raw file conversion Canon digital rebel" to see the options.

The other option is to take your photos in JPEG format (not RAW). Your computer can 'read' any JPEG format image.

Only jpeg on raw+jpeg

This is strange. Is the camera putting the Raw (CR2) files in a different directory somewhere?

Try reading the disk in a reader rather than plugging the camera into the computer, and explore the disk.

If it's really not recording RAWs then I'd call Canon... They're usually very good indeed with photography.

I'm unable to download photos from the disk.

You may be saving the images in the RAW format, which requires matching software to read. Most kiosks can't read them. If this is the case, switch back to jpeg format.

How to download photos taken with jpeg and raw at the same time

Can you use a memory card reader? Connect directly from the camera may not be allowing you to specify which pictures you can download. You can get an SDHC memory card reader from OfficeMax and pretty much anywhere else.
If you get a memory card reader make sure it is compatible with SDHC cards. If you get a 4GB or higher card you might not be able to use it with some other card readers.
