Sabre 17.542hs loss of power

I have a Sabre 17.542HS with a Kohler CV491S-27509 motor. It starts fine and idles smooth. When I put it at full throttle it seems to have a miss and has very little power. The rpms are also not up like they were just a couple weeks ago. When I engage the mower deck it almost stalls completely. I have changed the fuel filter, fuel, oil, oil filter. Cleaned the carburator (no gunk found). I also pulled the head off and checked and cleaned the valves and lifters (again no issues found). When reassembled it ran the same as before I took it apart. so no change.

Ok After loosing half the hair I had left. I broke down and took it to a local service shop. Well He found the problem. It turns out the exhaust lobe on the cam collapsed/wore down to pretty much nothing. So now it is just a matter of saving the money and getting the new cam, gaskets and lifters. Then it should be good to go.

You could have a weak coil and misfiring under a load each cylinder has it own coil on that engine you can get a inline spark tester to see

This engine only has one cylinder. Would the weak coil still let it idle smooth?

  • Anonymous Sep 05, 2012

Ok Tested with the inline spark tester. The spark is good and bright. Nice and steady at full throttle and slows down at idle.

a dirty jet inside the carb would cause rough running

  • Anonymous Sep 07, 2012

Well I just got done cleaning the carburator. Still the same. Still runnining beautifully at an idle. But when I put the throttle lever up to full it has no power and sounds like ****. It looks like it blows a air and a little fuel out the carb. I know it sounds like the intake valve. But why would it only be at full throttle? It seems like my next option is to have the valves reground and replace the push rods and lifters.

I don't know if this is any help but I checked the compression and it is 60. I don't have a leakdown tester so can't do that test.

Need a wiring diagram for John Deere 14.5/38gear with Briggs & Station 287707-1274-E1 Code 000823ZD

Have looked around the net for a free one for your Sabre with no luck but here's one to purchase. As those units were made from 1995-2002 I doubt there are any tech manuals you'd find in a Shop either.

When I first start my 84 Honda V65 SABRE, after its been sitting overnight or longer. I full choke it then start it. It idles very slow and almost stalls if I give it throttle it stalls. If I just leave it...

check for a vacume leak, as its been along time since i've looked at one of these is there a vacuum pipe on the distributor, this is the advanced timing if it has one on this engine, there is a diaphragm in this that over time can leak, this leaking would make hard starting on cold start if its failing.

My 05 shadow sabre starts, runs & idles fine except at high rpm (half to full throttle) air filter & plugs look ok. Has dg pipes and supposedly was rejetted. Just bought the bike & do not know...

i think you are on the right track, i would try draining and refilling tank with fresh gas,if it doesn't help, then likely the main jet has become partially clogged from improper storage or may just be, have you tried running on partial choke to see if it helps, this will comfirm a high speed lean mixture, you could try running a good fuel system cleaner b4 tearing carb apart, i like using a product called seafoam, cleans carb and carbon from engines. 1oz. pergallon. just be happy you only have one carb to mess with my vmax has four, yikes!!!!!!!!!good luc, feel free to e-mail me
