if the router is wireless then you need and xbox wireless dongle which connects to the xbox through the usb then scan for your router then put in the routers wpa or psk code

if your laptop get a signal than buy a eithernet cable and coonect your xbox 2 the laptop and go 2 your network settings and check the box that say share connection than wait a few mins. and try to connect to xboxlive this should work because thats how i get on xboxlive at my house.
Your Elite should of came with a transfer kit. If it didn't call 18004myxbox and they will send you one for free. You should be able to move all of your files from your old HD to the new one, then your DL content should work fine.
