When your computer emits beeps when you power on the computer, it's usually means that you have a memory issue. Try re-seating the memory modules and power on the computer. If you have more the one module, insert one at a time and power on the computer. The other issue is if that model supports 4 gig memory.

SOURCE: Dell Optiplex GX280 boot problem

I just repaired two Gateway systems with similar behavior (turn on power, fan runs at full speed, no boot), and both needed replacement system boards. (These were a different model, but the symptoms are typical of a dead system board.) I got the boards from a company called Blue Raven Technology (www.blueraven.com).

Before deciding the main board is bad, try another power supply to make sure that's not the problem. Also you might try clearing the CMOS memory on the system board (either by moving a jumper usually found near the backup battery, or by removing the battery itself). Sometimes corrupted CMOS data will keep the system from booting.

Same problem... orange power light, fan starts slow and builds up to very high speed.
I removed my video card and SIMMs --> it beeped on boot and the fan did not speed up.
Put one SIMM back in --> booted fine, pressed F2 to view BIOS. Memory reported fine.
Put all SIMMs back in --> all fine now.

SOURCE: Memory Upgrade Attempt Causes Computer Not to Post

Seeing as the message is indicating a problem at one of the timer checkpoints, fatal is probably an accurate description. You are most likely looking at a motherboard replacement scenario. I've seen improperly seated memory modules toast timer circuitry on old boards back in the days when most of the timing circuitry was constructed from discrete components, not entirely IC-based timing solutions, but I have never seen it happen on modern boards.

SOURCE: My 2gb ram stick died, so I tried upgrade to 4gb

Most appreciated naturalgal66.
Perhaps you would like more information, to put together some of the information I stated in the Clarifications.

This is a motherboard block diagram,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

This relates to the motherboard model you have. Motherboards used for the Intel Core i7 are of a different design, and technology.

CPU as you know stands for Central Processing Unit, or for short - Processor.

The Processor 'communicates' through the Front Side Bus, (FSB), to the Northbridge chip. (Think of the FSB as a 'Data Highway'. Communication goes back, and forth)

The Northbridge chip handles the Ram Memory, and the high speed graphics card slot. (If used on a particular motherboard) Since it handles a high speed graphics card slot, it only handles PCI-Express or AGP.
Not PCI.

The Northbridge chip communicates through the Internal Bus to the Southbridge chip.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of the motherboard.
Some examples are:
1) PCI, and PCIe.
(PCIe is PCI Express. It is PCI Express, but relates to the slower PCI Express x1. Not the faster PCI Express x16 used for graphics)

2) Onboard Audio

3) SATA, LAN, and USB ports

4) Ethernet
And other devices.

As you can see the Southbridge chip controls the Onboard graphics, (Integrated graphics) through a PCI bus.
It also controls anything that is installed in a PCI slot.

If you have time someday, you may want to look up some of the hardware, and technology used in a personal computer.
A lot of information can be found on Wikipedia.
You may want to type in Wikipedia's search box,

1) Northbridge (computing)
2) Southbridge (computing)
3) Front Side Bus
4) Sdram, (This page will start you with SDR Sdram. Single Data Rate Sdram. Links are also listed in blue for info on DDR Sdram, DDR2 Sdram, DDR3 Sdram, and includes the new technology coming, DDR4 Sdram)
5) Harddrive
6) Integrated Drive Electronics, (IDE)
7) SATA
8) RAID
9) Comparison of Nvidia chipsets (Also Comparison of Nvidia graphics processing units
10) Comparison of AMD chipsets (Also Comparison of AMD graphics processing units, and also to include Comparison of ATI graphics processing units.
11) GPU
12) Clock generator (Did you know that a quartz crystal, is used as an oscillator for a Processor?)

Anything you see in blue is a link to more information about it.

{Interested in knowing what's inside a Harddrive, or do you already know?

SOURCE: I have abrand new Dell XPS 8100 with upgraded

Depending on the main board, 6 beeps usually signify's either a RAM issue (like a bad connection or incompatible ram) or an expansion slot issue so check any other cards you may have installed and make sure that The new RAM stick is compatible with the main board.. The main board model code is printed on the main board. Use it to search for audible fault codes, or go to www.upgrading and repairing computers.com and search for the beep codes for the main board on this site. Also, try reseating all the RAM sticks and expansion cards, especially graphics card..make sure you have not dislodged any data connectors and double check everything..

Issues with 2gb 32ddr dell memory compatible in dell gx280

Unfortunately, the CPU on these computers may be capable of handling the 2GB memory, the motherboard isn't on either system.

The specs for the Dell GX280 are available here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx280/en/ug/specs02.htm . This system takes 400 or 533 MHz DDR2 non-ECC memory and the form-factor determines the maximum memory. In the mini-tower format, you have 4 DIMM slots and can have 4 GB of memory. In the small form factor, it takes 2 GB max.

The Dell E310 specs are available here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim3100/en/sm/specs0.htm . This system can only support 2 GB (2 x 1 GB) memory.

I wish that I had better news for you.

Cindy Wells
(who had a similar Pentium 4 computer with the 1 GB limit. Since that system was running a 32-bit system and only actively addressed 3 GB, I didn't try to put 2 GB sticks in any of the 4 memory slots.)

Dell optiplex gx860 continuous beep

This indicates a motherboard problem, first remove the ram one stick at a time and test as you go, if one stick is bad the computer won't start up. If memory checks out, remove hardware one at a time and put back as you check up the ladder, if all checks out the motherboard is the most likely issue.

I have purchase a memory upgrade KByte and not sure how to install. I went to www.kbytememory.com and found nothing to help me.

This looks very much like my old M90... you pop out the battery, locate and unscrew the memory door, and then snap in the new memory. Then restart the laptop... if it beeps at your (this is called a beep code) then the BIOS doesn't recognize one or both of the sticks. Assuming all goes well it should prompt you and say something to the effect of 'amount of system memory has changed, press F1 to continue or F2 for bios'... go into BIOS and confirm its reading the new memory amount (2GB will say 2064). This model apparently only accepts 2 x 1GB sticks so hopefully you didn't order 2GB sticks... unless there's a BIOS update you can install the mobo won't recognize memory sticks greater than 1GB. Good luck.

Why does memory upgrade for biostar k8m800-mam2 motherboard cause memory error beeps?

I would verify that the memory you're using is actually working properly.
Try to boot to the new stick and see if it works.
If not, it doesn't work.
If it does, you may need to replace the original stick with the same stick that you are trying to use now.
Use this site as a guide.

It doesn't accept a memory ram upgrade. I had 512 MB and wanted to install 1 GB but the beeps started to sound.

Hi there,

The beeps are likely related to a memory issue on your motherboard when you boot up. This is usually caused by either getting a bad Stick of RAM, or the specs of the RAM are not compatible with your motherboard. Make sure that the specs of the new RAM is exactly the same as the specs of the old RAM. Each motherboard can only accept certain specifications of RAM. If you have additional questions feel free to leave a comment and I will get back to you on it.

Amber light on the motherboard is on i hear several beeps and it doesn't boot up

Usually beeps emitting from the computer indicate a memory error.. Try to re-seat the memory modules. If that doesn't work then try removing 1 module at a time to see if you have a bad memory stick.

Unsuccessful memory upgrade

I work on GX 620 dells alot. I work on them for a school district.

They have alot of issues. Particularly with memory issues, try reseating the memory or trying a different memory slot. You shouldnt have to under clock it. Just run it as normal.

If it beeps on start up, then its probably a memory problem. The dell website has online support and will give you a list of dell beep codes

http://www.support.dell.com/

you can type in your dell service tag number located on the back, or just picking out the model.

Try using just using the new memory stick by itself without the old ones.

If your computer came with a disk ( it should) It either Blue or Black, if its black, boot from cd and it will load a test program, try using that to check that the memory is good. If its blue then its older and just lets you re-install windows.

If its looping, where it gives you a black screen with options to boot in safe mode but restarts no matter what option you pick.

Load the windows cd like your going to re-install, Boot from cd ( F12 ) on boot, pick boot cd drive and when it loads, pick ( R) for repair and when it goes to command prompt, type in. ( chkdsk C: /p ) exactly like that

it will run a repair. When done, type EXIT and hit enter.

When it restarts, remove the disk and see if it gives you the option again to pick how to start windows.

Pick ( star windows normally ) see if this works.

If the repair works then it wasnt the memory as much as it was just Dells Crappy hardware configuration.

Let me know what happens and i can try to help you further.

It could be a bad memory stick that you happened to get.

Good luck.
