Windows says its starting up, then screen goes grey. Cursor works. Thats all.

Try reinstalling the gpu driver. If the problem still persists, the screen may be going out.

look at your startup files and see if this program "apoint2k" is running. However, it is a driver for the touch pad. Try enabling it to solve the problem.

SOURCE: I have an HP DV 9700 and recently the lcd display
The display is dying unfortunatley. The laptop is about 2 years old? You can connect an external monitor to confirm. If teh external looks fine, it is definitely your display.
If you have a warranty, it shoudl be covered. If not, might be best to get a new laptop. Netbooks are faily inexpensive.
