I fixed it!! Turn the lens to Manual mode (moving to M). Twist the very tip of the lens till it unlocks.
If you twist the lens on the end far enough on the end to the right you will find it "locks". This is what is causing the screeching sound,, it's locked and can't auto focus. Twist the very end to the left till it releases. This fixed it for me.

i have a similar problem, is the screen white with occasional lines that look like a badly tuned digital tv? my tv out works so I am guessing its a LCD problem, try replacing the LCD like I am doing...

try pressing the 2 green buttons to reset the unit . if you get lucky and it turns on, immediately follow the steps to update your firmware on this website http://ampin.wordpress.com/2007/03/02/nikon-d40-firmware-upgrade/ , otherwise you will need to take the camera to an authorized repair center . :)

Are you in auto mode? If it is manual then it is possible that the settings are not correct for the light. You can look at the meter to see what the camera thinks about the exposure.
It sounds as if your subject is too dark. Does this happen when the area is brightly lit? Does the flash fire?
