This computer is a few years old. i dont often use the cd drive, i mostly just web surf. however, when i do insert a cd, i hear the drive kick on and start spinning, but only for a moment. this is followed by my whole system freezing up and i must turn it off. what do you think? virus? broken drive? loose connection? missing software, maybe?

1: bad Disc or wrong disk. non stated.
2: bad drive.
3: bad driver. (cd/dvd HP driver) get it from HP
4: windows is corrupted. XP or w7 was shipped if windows.

First off, no CD stated, there are vast formats for CD
the first that must work are:
1: CD-DA a store bought CD..
2: any install disk, CD, with files on it , do yo see files"?
3: do you have the HP driver loaded for the CD drive?
4" was your, CD home made say burned CD-R ( recorded?)
if XP is Service PACK 3 loaded? it must be.
your PC came new with many CD/ DVD drive options even the LightScribe.

well go to the device manager and check for the devices enlisted there and update your dvd/cd device from it properties>update drivers and update it from the internet!!in ms dos mode run fdisk and check ur partition be sure you are good at working with ms dos oderwise you will end up messing things

Try deleting it manually, go into safemode with cmd prompt only.

Hi,
Make sure that your CD is Bootable. Now you will need to do settings in BIOS to boot from CD..
1. Power ON the computer and Press "Delete Key" or F1 or F2 or F10 Key to enter in BIOS.
2. Goto Boot Menu Options
3. Select First Boot Device to CD / DVD
4. Second Second Boot Device to HDD
Now Save Settings and exit . it will reboot computer . If your CD is bootable then it will ask to boot from cd message.
Option 2 :
You can try by pressing F12 or F11 key simultaneouslty after power ON computer. It will display Boot Menu so from there you can select "CD/ DVD Drive " and press enter then it will boot from computer.
It will glad to help you further if your problem doesnot get resolved.

I had the same problem and found that I needed to have my drive fixed, they also did a total cleanup of my hard drive to make it work faster as mine used to freeze when i was using it. I hope this helps.
