I first noticed some things were not freezing such as popsicles. I rearranged items in front of the vents blowing on the top of the freezer so they could blow freely. No help. So then I turned up the dial to coldest. Still no help. It seems like some things are freezing but others don't The area that doesn't freeze is right in front on the second and third shelves. Please help!!!
Check the door gasket near those shelves.
Make sure the condenser fins or tubes have adequate air flow for cooling (it looks a bit like a small but fat car radiator). In most freezers, this will be in the bottom in the back. You may have to remove a vented cover to check this. Usually there is a fan blowing air through the condenser. Carefully vacuum out any dirt in the condenser (the fins are delicate and bend easily), and verify that the fan runs smoothly when the compressor is running.
Put a thermometer in the freezer right by the cold air inlet to verify that the refrigerant is doing its job. It should read 0 degrees F. or below (-18 degrees C). If it doesn't get down that far, the compressor needs to be recharged or replaced.
If the door has been hit hard (somebody falling and slamming into it) the door insulation may be damaged there. Check to see if the outside of the door feels cold there compared to the rest of the door. If it does, the door needs to be repaired or replaced.

Look for frost build up on back wall at bottom the auto defrost may be out. Check if the evaporator fan is blowing. If not it's stuck by something or needs replaced. If not The sealed system may have a leak or restiction causing it to only work closest to the evaporator i.e. the lower shelf.

If this is not a frost free unit. I say replace it. I don't believe in recharging a deep freeze. You can never really trust them again. The food inside is worth more than the freezer. If this is a frost free unit, See if the fan inside is working. This can also be a defrost system proplem such as a timer and well worth fixing.

Is the condenser clean? If it is you may have a refrigerant leak or an inefficient compressor.

In the newer freezers and refrigerators they are mounting the condenser coil in the side panels of the freezer or refrigerator eliminating the large usually black frame work of tubing that used to be mounted on the back. This saves room but causes the sides to be warm as the heat is now dissipated by the side panels. You should have about an inch of clearance on both sides to let air flow over the side panels to cool them. I have a newer side by side and it also is feels quite warm when you put your hand on the side.

Hi,
As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...
Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...
