Tip & How-To about Baby Gear

Toddler bed safety

Many parents worry about their toddlers safety when transitioning them to a toddler bed. I would like to give you a few tips that will help ensure your childs safety while putting your minds at ease.

Choose a bed that is low to the ground - this will not only make it easier for your child to get in and out of bed, but help minimize the risk of injury

Install adjustable guardrails

Carefully select bed location - keep your childs toddler bed away from hazards such as windows, doors, radiators and blind cords

Ensure the bed is sturdy

Consider placing something soft around the perimeter of the bed such as a quilt or a rug to cushion a potential fall

Do not place the bed against a wall, your child could get trapped between the bed and wall; place the headboard against a wall and leave the other side free (with a guardrail)

Wait until your child is at least 2 until you give them a pillow for their bed to avoid risk of suffocation

In case you wanted to know more about guardrails I have found a great article that explains why to use them and how to use them safely - http://www.parentingtoddlers.com/toddlerbedrails.html

I bought a toddler bed for my son but he refuses to sleep in it. What can I do?

First of all don't panic! It's actually quite commons for toddlers to be resistant to changing beds. Here's a good article that gives some tips for helping to make the transition an easier one. http://www.keepkidshealthy.com/toddler/toddlerquicktips/bed.html

Do toddler beds need special mattresses?

The only thing you need to check is that the mattress is the right for your toddler bed and that it's appropriate for the weight of your child. Usually toddler beds are only transitional until they move into full beds so I wouldn't worry too much about the mattress. Just make sure it meets safety and fire hazard requirements (check the label attached to the mattress).

Are there different types of toddler beds or a standard type in different styles?

There are quite a few varying types of toddler beds in the market. The first kind I will mention is a convertible crib. The great thing about a convertible crib is that it will last much longer. Some parents also find that a convertible crib eases the transition phase. Next there is the "captain bed" also known as a storage bed. This bed has built-in compartments everywhere - under the bed frame, in the footboards, even in the headboards. There are other types of toddler beds such as loft toddler beds, futon toddler beds, and platform toddler beds; however I think they are less popular and ultimately less safe for your toddler.
