Hi I have a 2007 S550 Mercedes. It has just over 80k miles. Another question was posted here with the exact same question but I wanted to know if he ever figured out what was wrong with his car. My car has a loud whirring sound that comes from under the hood. It happens now every time I drive the car but started slowly over the past couple of months. Just yesterday the engine light came on but not the check engine indicator. The whirring sound starts even when the car is shut off and can even start when the car is cold and I simply lock or unlock the car, or touch the door handles. It comes and goes and is not always constant. The engine temperature and other gauges are just fine. Can someone please tell me what this might be? I am afraid it is very expensive to fix. It started not long after I had the air conditioning system fixed in the car a few months ago though I'm not sure it's related to that, but it does sound like some kind of fan is running under the hood or something. If you have any input, please advise. Thank you so much!

Have the power steering pump checked for excessive noise by a shop locally.

Have a mechanic look but it sounds like the bendix which spins the starter is bad, usually if bad exactly what you are describing. When you try to start it engages and in a lot of cases if just a click and then will work at other times it is the problem---If the starter has been there for a while replace it and the bendix which almost always come as a unit.
