It sounds like you have permissions problems in your Desktop folder.
For the non-techie, the following is probably the most straightforward way to fix this issue:

Your macbook is not locating your hardrive.
turn off your laptop, insert the Mac OS disc in the drive, and then reboot while holding down the c key to allow it to boot from the OS on the DVD.
Then use the disk utilities application from the desktop menu and to a disk repair on your hard drive and then restart.

SOURCE: my macbook air hardware test shows error code

The meaning of Apple Hardware Test results is Apple proprietary.
That having been said, it appears that AHT is reporting a problem with a hardware component associated with your hard drive (the drive itself, a drive temperature sensor, or something else). An Apple Authorized Service Facility will be able to give you more information.

The folder with the question mark in it indicates either that the machine cannot access the hard drive, or the drive has no recognizable system software on it. Boot from the DVD that came with your machine (since the Air has no DVD drive, you will need an external DVD drive) and run the Disk Utility to attempt to repair the internal hard drive. This will tell you whether the problem is bad data or a bad drive. If it is a bad drive, you will have to bring it in for service. If it is bad data, you may have to reformat the drive and reinstall the OS, which means losing anything you haven't already backed up.

Sometimes boots but only the dock, pointer and pinwheel show up. Nothing works

At startup, hold down the "T" key to enter Target mode. Then connect your laptop to another Mac via a firewire cable. Use the other Mac to browse the hard drive contents of your MacBook. Move all files from your desktop to another folder such as the documents folder. Try restarting your MacBook again.

1. My 2008 MacBook Pro rejects most cd's and dvd's, has a Intel 2.5 GHz Intel core 2 processor. 2. When I downloading or streaming movies they keep re-buffering

Solving Problems with Streaming Services

If the Server Does Not Start Up or Quits Unexpectedly:

  • Check the error log.
  • Make sure the QuickTimeStreamingServer file is in the /usr/sbin/ folder.

You must be logged in to the server computer as Administrator (root) to see the QuickTimeStreamingServer file in the Workspace Manager.
  • Use the Mac OS X Server Setup Assistant to reconfigure the Ethernet ports.
If Media Files Do Not Stream Properly:
  • Check the error log.
  • Make sure the movie file is supported by the QuickTime Streaming Server. Check the list of compatible file formats.
  • Try streaming a sample movie to see if the server can stream it. You can download a sample prehinted movie from the Apple Software Updates Web site: http://www.apple.com/swupdates

If the server streams the sample movie, the problem you're having may be with the way your movie file is prepared. Recreate the movie.

If the sample movie doesn't stream, the problem you're having may be with the server computer or the network.
  • Try hinting the movie again with the Optimize Hints For Server option selected.
  • Check streaming server activity and if necessary, reduce the number of connections or throughput.
  • If the problem occurs on a Mac OS client computer, open the TCP/IP control panel on the client computer and make sure MacIP is not selected.
  • If the problem occurs on a client computer, make sure the user has the appropriate settings in the Streaming Proxy and Streaming Transport panels of the QuickTime Settings control panel. The administrator for the client computer's network should be able to provide the correct settings.
  • If the problem occurs for media streamed using PlaylistBroadcaster, try hinting the movies again with the RTP Payload Encoding set to QuickTime and Smooth Data Rate enabled.
  • If you are reflecting more than one live stream, make sure each stream uses a separate UDP port. Otherwise client computers will show a message with error 500. You set up ports in the relay configuration file.

If Streaming Service is Slow:
  • If you are streaming QuickTime movies, make the movies self-contained using your authoring application, and make sure hinting is optimized for streaming services.
  • Reduce the maximum number of connections or the throughput.
  • Turn off other services.
  • Place media files on other hard disks to improve server performance.

Because QuickTime Streaming Server can use only one media folder, you need to create links from the folder you have selected in QuickTime Streaming Admin to the media files on other hard disks. To do so:

In the Workspace Manager, press the Control key and drag the folders that contain the media from the other disks to the folder you have selected as the media folder.

I installed photoshop 7.0 on my pc.when i tried to start it the error comes "could complete your request because of missing or invalid personalisation"

Errors such as this could happen when an older version or BETA (testing) version of Photoshop CS has already been installed on the computer, or when your registration information file does not get written properly or is corrupted. When there exists multiple copies of Photoshop in the Applications folder, your system and Photoshop may get confused and encounter conflict with which files it should use to verify personalization. The same case could happen if there is a BETA version of Photoshop currently or previously installed on your computer. This conflict can lead to personalization errors when launching the application.
The Photoshop CS installer personalizes the Photoshop CS application within the Applications folder alphabetically. If multiple instances of the Photoshop CS folder are present, only the first one alphabetically will be personalized. New installations of Photoshop CS (which folder falls alphabetically after the first installation) will not be personalized.
A damaged or incorrectly written personalization file (userreg or ps.sif) can also cause Photoshop to return a personalization error when you start it. Some troubleshooting steps which I recommend are as follows:
Solution 1: Uninstall and then re-install most recent version of Photoshop.
If Photoshop's serial number is not displayed on the bottom of Photoshop CS's sg Photoshop, you may have another version of Photoshop CS on the computer. Uninstall the copy of Photoshop and reinstall it. It is especially important to remove any beta copies of Photoshop you may have.
How to remove and uninstall Photoshop: 1. Move any personal files from the Adobe Photoshop CS folder(s) on the hard disk to another location. 2. Uninstall Photoshop from the control panel 2. Delete all Adobe Photoshop CS folder(s) in the Applications folder if there are any. 3. Drag the Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop CS Settings folder to the Trash. 4. Insert the Photoshop CD-ROM, double-click the installer file in the Photoshop folder on the CD-ROM, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Solution 2: If the reinstallation did not work, download the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool at http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html
Just follow the instructions on the same page mentioned. This will help you clean out all the files of Photoshop that was installed to your system, as well as the registries that may also cause conflicts.
Solution 3: Use the ImageReady personalization file.
If Photoshop's serial number is displayed on the splash screen, or you performed the solutions referred to above, the cause of the errors is a personalization file that is not written correctly or is damaged. If you can successfully open ImageReady, you can use ImageReady's personalization file for Photoshop.
To Use the ImageReady personalization file: 1. Ctrl+click the Adobe Photoshop CS application file in Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS and choose Show Package Contents. 2. Open the Contents folder, and then open the Resources folder. 3. Locate the USERREG file in the Resources folder, and drag it to the desktop. Keep the Resources folder open. 4. Ctrl+click the Adobe ImageReady CS application file in Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS and choose Show Package Contents. 5. Open the Contents folder, and then open the Resources folder. 6. Locate the USERREG file in the ImageReady Resources folder, and copy it to the Photoshop Package's Contents/Resource folder. 7. Close all open folders, and restart Photoshop. Restart ImageReady to make sure that the USERREG file was copied, not moved, to the Photoshop Package's Contents/Resource folder.
Solution 4: Replace the Photoshop .sif file.
If Photoshop does not open without error, also replace the .sif file: 1. Ctrl+click the Adobe Photoshop CS application file in Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS and choose Show Package Contents. 2. Open the Contents folder, and then open the Resources folder and the ASN folder in the Resources folder. 3. Locate the PS.SIF file in the ASN folder, and drag it to the desktop. Keep the ASN folder open. 4. Ctrl+click the Adobe ImageReady CS application file in Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS and choose Show Package Contents. 5. Open the Contents folder, and then open the Resources folder and the ASN folder in the Resources folder. 6. Locate the PS.SIF file in the ASN folder, and copy it to the Photoshop Package's Contents/Resource folder. 7. Close all open folders, and restart Photoshop. Also restart ImageReady to make sure the PS.SIF file was copied, not moved to the Photoshop Package's Contents/Resource folder. 8. In setup editor, under components, expand the Typelibrary.tlb component. Expand advertising and remove all entries under it. (should be only one.) Compile and install.

Everytime when i switch on my gigabeat f20, it shows this error.NO SYSTEM FOUND ON HDD. i've tried formating but once this error appears, you can't do anything. Sometimes it shows SYSTEM ERROR.

Hi theofrimp109,

This error usually happens when the firmware has been corrupted or deleted. The easiest way to correct this is by updating the firmware. You may also try to restore the firmware data by following the steps below.

1. Connect the gigabeat to your computer using a USB cable.

2. Start Explorer on the PC.

3. Open the folder in which the gigabeat room is installed.
--> The folder in which the gigabeat room is installed can be opened by clicking [Start] [All Programs] [TOSHIBA gigabeat room 2.0] [gigabeat room 2.0
Program Folder]. Usually, the folder will be found in C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\gigabeat room 2.0.

4. If you can't find the folder, please go inside the gigabeat then click on [tools], [folder option], go to [view tab] then select [show hidden files and folders].

5. Now, inside the gigabeat root, copy a folder named "GBSYSTEM" located in the folder that was opened in Step 3.

6. Use "Safely Remove Hardware" and disconnect the gigabeat.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

My macbook air cannot preview anything by its Preview application. i cannot open iphoto. when i start, if i open Macintosh HD or any other folder on Desktop then I cannot open system preferences and vice...

I would start by attempting too restart. If this does not fix it, open Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility). From here click verify permissions and then verify disk. If either of those come up with errors, then click the corresponding solution (repair permissions or repair disk). This should solve any problems you are having, but if it does not, Insert the USB drive that your MacBook Air came with and reinstall the OS. Good Luck!

Unable to open backed-up files. Error code 10657

I got error code 10657 when I tried to open a file in Finder on the external drive that I had used for a Time Machine backup before I reformatted the hard drive of my MacBook. When I started Time Machine on the MacBook (with Leopard reinstalled) and went to the backup date that held the desired file, I was told that I needed to recreate the containing folder (or choose another location for the restore). I chose recreate the folder, and the restored file was available in the new folder without any further problem.
