Toilet Refills Every 15-Minutes

One of four Eljer Canterbury one-piece toilets refills itself every 15-minutes or so. Thinking the problem was a bad flapper valve, I replaced it (and the ones in the other three toilets as well not knowing how old they were). Still refills. I have cleaned the flapper valve seal seat area and replaced the flapper valve again. Still refills. I removed the whole flush valve assembly, cleaned its seal surfaces, added Vaseline to the seal surfaces, and reinstalled the valve. Still refills. Today, I purchased a whole new flush valve assembly and installed it. Still refills. Water is leaking out of the tank into the bowl. The water level in the tank goes down and then the fill valve kicks in and fills the tank. You can actually see water trickling into the bowl after the tank stops filling. Any ideas on how to fix? Thanks.

Smithbrother: The new flush valve assembly was provided with a pre-attached fill tube. There are no obvious cracks in the ceramic. Do you know of a way to make possbile cracks more visible? Thanks for your response.

flyfisher126: I do have some food coloring, which I have yet to try. The toilet is not new. It is about 11 years old. I have been advised it only started the mysterious refills about 5 months ago. Thanks for your response.

I have the same problem with an Eljer one-piece toilet the same age or older. I was hoping to find an answer...Has anything worked?

Did the new flush valve asembly also have a new fill tube attached? If not look for a crack in the fill tube,
    or in the china itself..

I have minute amount of leakage into the bowl causing mold to grow. I believe that it may be the rubber seal for the flapper body to the porcelain.

Try going to this web site and look at there directions for changing the valve. Is this how you changed it?  www.eljer.com/products/toilet/FVRT%20Instructions.pdf

I am now thinking that where the valve screws into the one piece toilet it is leaking through there threads there. As far as the age of the commode, I am still working and repairing 1938 model toilets routinely,in some of the building I work in.  I would dry the tank. Get scilicone caulk and caulk all around where the valve seats into the commode around the outside of the flapper seat. Make it water tight. Let that dry then see if it still leaks. Also you may try weighting the flapper down with part of a brick or something then put the food coloring into the tank to se if it stil leaks then. Good luck.

It sounds like you REALLY know what you are doing, so I kind of hate to even make a suggestion, but If I were you, I would HAVE to fix this on my own! I can not handle defeat! I may not have the solution, but may be we can get to it together!
I would try to add some food coloring, or the little blue or green pills that the large grey home builder place has for free. It will color the water, and MAY give you an idea of the direction it is taking. If you changed the flush valve assembly has been changed and you did the vaseline trick (a good one!) I would just about have to think you may have a faulty toilet! I am assuming it is new, and recently installed. If colored water does not show you a route, I am stumped!

Elijer Diplomat toilet flushes perfectly, but after the water in the bowl takes forever to fill up again. You have to wait 10-15 min. before the water is up to normal level and it will then flush...

Pressure assisted toilets have a stainless steel tank that refills under lid,if your refilling bowl it only needs to fill trap for smell, the pressure assist does the rest, thats part of the water saving of the toilet, you don't have a lot of water in the bowl

When flushed the tank refills and the float goes up.... after about 5 mintues of quiet, there is a "shhhhh" refill sound..and bubles inthe water from the main pump. how do I fix this? 6 LPT and 1.6 gpf

Adjust the water level in the tank to the water level line in the tank. If the water is spilling into the open tube in the center of the tank, that will cause the water to run.

If water is not seeping into the tube, then maybe water is leaking through the rubber stopper and into the tank. You will have to replace that rubber stopper

My toilet refills itself every 10-15 minutes. Is it the flapper that should be replaced?

yup. Just to be certain, put food coloring in the tank. If it ends up in the bowl you know its the flapper.

My toilet refills itself every 10-15 minutes. Is it the flapper that should be replaced?

If it is refilling you need to pull the lid and watch the valve for ten minutes to see what is happening, if the float does not seat then the float could be bad but if it is not adusted it could do this as well. look to see if the float pops up if it does then replace the flapper valve also make sure the chain is notto tightto the flapper valve. If you need more information please post here.
