Nikon D3100 shutter "problem"?

I was given a new Nikon D3100 for my birthday a few weeks ago. It's been working fine but today it seems to have developed a strange problem. When I take a shot at any shutter speed, it sounds as if it's on a 1/3 shutter. no matter what speed I set it to, even 1/4000, you can hear the mechanical sliding of the shutter opening, then closing about a 1/3 second after. Before, at fast shutter speeds, the sounds of the shutter uncovering and covering the sensor were so fast that they were pretty much indistinguishable from each other. Functionally it seems fine, maybe theres a delay between pressing the shutter release and the shutter actually releasing? Thanks in advance

Are your pictures properly exposed and are they sharp or are your pictures degraded? Is that 1/3-second you describe a delay between the time you push the shutter release and the time the picture is taken or somthing else? Check to make sure you're in the proper shutter release mode (slider switch to right of the mode dial). Also, your self-timer may be turned on. Your camera allows you to set a 2 or 10 second delay from the menus. If it is set to 2 seconds and turned on, it might seem like a 1/3-second delay. If that doesn't help, you camera is covered by Nikon's warranty. Contact Nikon Service at 1-800-NIKON-US (1-800-645-6687) 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday.

SOURCE: No picture is taken when shutter release button is pressed

Are those NiMH batteries? Have you tried resetting the camera? If no standard way, just take out batteries for a few minutes, the more the merrier, let the tension build, and replace them. Try tapping on the lens area, it might loose something up. Best I can do, know it aint much ;] Good luck!

SOURCE: D50 won't take a picture!

I was having the same problem.. And since I could not afford to take it to the shop, I tried everything I could think of...
Then I fixed it!!
It seems that the slide door behind the shutter was stuck for some reason... If you remove the lens.. (make sure the camera is in manual mode)... snap a shot so the shutter is up.. then gently slide the panel in the back down....
Once I did that.. the camera was working again.... Hope this easy solution works for you guys....

SOURCE: "Error. Press shutter release button

hiit is not easy to tell what exact problem. It has quite of causes in your case. But I can only tell most common cause that it is sequence unit fail. It could also other like shutter fail, mirror box mech fail, motor fail, control pcb fail, and so on...etc...I recommended you bring to your local service place or Nikon service center which is helpful to you.

My Nikon d3100 only takes black photo's when the lens finder is working but the lcd is showing a black screen but still has icons so what is wrong?

sounds very much like a CCD unit failure. This will require another trip back for repairs and now that it is out of warranty it is going to cost plenty.

Nikon D3100 pictures come out black/blank

As a test, I would take a photo with the camera in the auto exposure mode. Write down the ISO number, f-stop and shutter speed the camera uses. Next, set your camera to the manual mode and set the ISO number, f-stop and shutter speed that you recorded. If the picture is displayed correctly, your problem was that you used the wrong settings in manual. If you still have the problem, you need to have Nikon take a look at your camera. You can call Nikon's USA Repair Center at 1-800-645-6687 from 9AM-8PM EST, Monday to Friday.

D3100 is showing a blurred image on the screen and sometimes get better with a little pressure. Could you help me?

Dear Robert,
RELAX. Take a deep breadth. Your D3100 is working perfectly. I'm a proud owner of this little genius of a DSLR myself.

What you've stated as a problem, is in-fact the D3100's auto-focus at work.

When the shutter button is pressed half-way, it focuses the subject. When it is pressed the full way, it snaps the pic. Simple.

So, you should be happy, that your camera is working fine.

Have fun, save your memories, and this camera will go a long way.

Gimme a thumbs up too please ;-)

Was sitting at a shuttle bus stop at the Grand Canyon and my D3100 slipped off my lap onto the ground. Picked it up and could still see the pics I had already taken - thought it was ok. Started taking...

Of course it's fixable. Only an inspection at a Nikon service facility can tell you the extent of damage and give you an estimate. (lesson learned...always use the neckstrap). In the meantime, you could remove the lens, fire off a few shots and see if the mirror is flipping up and whether the shutter is opening.

I bought a AF-S 55-200 VR about four months ago. Lately, the VR doesn't seem to work right. It jumps around and often produces worse results than not having it on at all. I have the kit lens that came...

If the lens is only four months old then it's still under Nikon's warranty, so there is absolutely no point in trying to repair this yourself. Faults like these are most likely to occur in the first few months of use.

Just send it to the nearest authorised Nikon service centre or if you live in the UK you can demand a refund or exchange from the retailer. Given the choice, I'd strongly recommend the second option.

Hi i have a nikon d3100 and just got the mll3 for my remote shutter but i dont know how to get it to work

The D3100 doesn't work with the ML-L3 remote. You need a MC-DC2 remote cord or equivalent.
