More likely than not, you have the famous broken solder joint(s) at the coil inside the FOB...if that is fine and all solder joints look fine , then you had best get MB, or a good Mercedes Independant garage, to check the EIS and make sure it sees the key
HI k2mrk the problem is the remote is not being used long enough to charge internal battery and that's cousin your lock&unlock function not work until you place in the ignition The way to solve is try use remote at lest ones a day .
I have a 2001 C240 with the same issue. I removed the positive battery cable from the battery and kept it off for 30 seconds then replaced it. Everything was reset and the key worked.
