Gaggia Synchrony Brew Unit Block

Machine has stopped working with error given "Brewunit Block". I've tried to take the brew unit out but it appears to have stopped midcycle and so will not slide out.
Is there any way of resetting the machine so the brewunit will go back to it's original position?

You have got the gears out of alignment. You don't really want to take out brew group unless at end of cycle. You can fool machine to get brew group back in.
Here is how :

BREW GROUP REMOVAL AND DRIVE GEARS ADJUSTMENT
FOR AUTOMATIC MACHINES
If you ever find yourself in need of removing a Brew Group that has jammed. This will assist you in doing so correctly.

To fix this problem follow these simple steps:
You will need a #1 Philips screwdriver

1.) First, open the door on the machine and remove the drip tray and dredge drawer

2.) Locate the nickel size hole in the brew group. It will have an "N" next to it. At the 9 o'clock position, you will see another hole about 1/3 of the size of the first. Directly behind this hole, or about an inch up depending on the position the machine was stopped in you will see a single philips head screw. You may have to look around the side of the brew group to locate the screw as it is not always visible from the smaller hole. Remove this screw; it holds a small coupling water inlet (it is similar looking to a tobacco pipe) to the brew group.

3.) Remove the brew group by pressing/pushing (depending on your machine) on the part that says “Press" or "Push”. Pull firmly and straight out. Be cautious to not break the brew unit. Also be aware of the door of your machine as it can break as well.

4.) With the brew group out, remove the small coupling water inlet (tobacco pipe) that is probably still stuck to your machine and reinstall it in the brew group as it was before. Make sure the screw is installed snugly but not too tight.

5.) Turn the brew group around so you are facing the back. Now imagine what a check mark looks like, the top we will call position A (longer part of the checkmark) and where the checkmark ends (the smaller portion) is point B. You will notice what looks like a large checkmark where the coupling water inlet is located. The water coupling can slide up and down in this checkmark opening. The water coupling should be in the B position.

REINSTALLING THE BREW GROUP
To do this, the gears will have to be reset to the start position. In order to do so, you will have to bypass the three micro-switches (Brew Group, Dump Box and the Door switch).
Bypassing the micro switches:

1.) Looking at the back-side of the brew group, not the side that says "Push" or "Press," you will notice something fin-like or nose shaped. This piece fits into a keyhole or coin slot looking slot in the machine and that is where the brew unit micro-switch is located. Take something like an index card, envelope, or folded up piece of paper, and insert it into that keyhole so that it will trick the machine into thinking that the brew unit is installed. Start the piece of paper at the top of the slot and slide it to the bottom of the slot. The paper should be thick enough so you can let go and it will remain in place. Leave this object in there until the following steps are complete.

2.) WITHOUT putting the brew group back into the machine, reinstall the drip-tray and dredge drawer and close the door.

3.) After doing so you can then turn the machine ON. At this time the gears will begin moving until they return to the correct start position. At this point remove the object from the keyhole position and you can now reinstall the brew group. If the brew group does not go back in correctly, try a few more times. The machine will return to its home position. Note: The two large spokes of The brew drive shaft should in the Up position

At times, the gears in the brew drive assembly will not complete the cycle to the proper
start position for different reasons. Some of the reasons are:
• Brew group jammed or blocked
• Either one of the micro switches in the brew drive have gone bad.
• Brew drive motor Failure.
• Broken teeth on either of the brew drive gears.
• Dirty brew group, covered by coffee grinds.
• Brew group or gears not lubricated.
• Connections to the board from brew drive assy., or motor have gone bad.
A jammed or blocked brew group happens when the brew group starts the cycle but doesn’t finish it.

Because no logical reason the error “BREWUNIT BLOCKED” appears also when the cup heating circuit is open... because heater or fuses are wrong..,
Gaggia should have informed about this anomaly in the net.
So, before you change your Brew Unit or you CPU..,, just check continuity between the two yellow wires... and bingo!

Your machine has stopped mid-cycle.
1. Open the brew group door and look for a screw holding the the coupling to the water inlet, lower left side of the brew group. Remove the screw with a phillipshead screwdriver.
2. Remove the brewgroup by holding the handle and pressing on the "press" button. The brew group will slide out.
3. Remove the water inlet piece left behind from the machine and re-attach it to the brewgroup.
4. Now you must reset the machine. Bypass the three microswitches to the door, the dump box and the brew group by taping them down. Once they are all bypassed the unit will move the gears to the correct position with the two larger cams on top.

Put in your brew group and you are good to go.

If this problem persists you need to send it in for service.

I have taken the brewunit out of the machine and bypassed the switch so I can see inside the machine. When I turn on the machine the gear is working fine. But the message still appear after reset?

The gear your speaking of is the brew unit drive. This gear drives the brew unit into the different positions to complete the coffee process. From the home position the brew unit receives the fresh ground and then compresses the coffee - I am guessing it is here is where the failure is - if the amount of coffee is to great, or the grind is to fine - the brew unit drive may be having issues trying to compress it, or the motor could just be long in tooth and has weakened. Try less of a grind and a coarser grind and see if that helps .

Brew unit stuck

Hi molly girl.
You can try to clean your Brewunit. Most of the times when that message appears, it means the brewunit is dirty

You can have more info in the manual if you dont have it:

No matter what I do the Gaggia Titanium espresso machine reads brewunit missing;. This is what I did: I removed the brewunit of the machine to clean it, and reset the N to the correct position on the front...

HI
If the brew unit is in the wrong position when inserted you can knock the lever off the microswitch in the back. If the lever is knocked off you will never get the brw unit miss message to go away. You will have to take the machine apart and replace the lever on the microswitch. Sorry
We made a modification to the brew unit that would prevent this from happening. We modified all the brew units on the compact machines before sending them out so we would never get them back for this reason.

Hi, My Gaggia Titanium shows a Brew unit missing error. I have tried everything i can think of; - cleaned the inside - removed and inserted brew unit multiple times - switched machine on/off (including...

Try taking the brew unit out, and clean the area inside the machine for coffee grains before reinserting it. There's a tiny sensor for if the unit is inserted, but it can be confused if the machine gets messy inside.

Screen says brewunit blocked. Brewunit seems clear but stops in wrong position, ie not 'home' any ideas? Thanks

Hi If you remove the brew unit and put everything back with out it the brew unit. Turn th machine on and see if it will cycle? Open the door and look in the back where the brew unit was. There is a cog in the back with teeth. There are 2 large teeth, and they should be at the 10 and 12:00 position roughly. If they are anywhere else you have a broken drive and need to get the gears replaced. If they are in the correct position check the front of the brew unit where the circles are. There are 2 diamonds and they should be pointing at each other. if they are not you need to bring them together with the key tool. Insert it into the center of the circles and turn until they line up, then put back into the machine, and see if it will work. If it still doesn't you have a bad board.

Machine is stuck in rinse cycle and brewunit

Take the brew unit out again, and try to twist the rotational mechanism so that the little arrows in the front of the axis align. This should allow you to insert the unit.
On insertion, you might also need to push the little handle on the front of the brew unit to allow the coffee trough to fit.

BrewUnit Blocked Error

The brew unit sensor may have become disconnected from the main circuit board. If you are very brave, you can UNPLUG THE UNIT, remove the top panel and check that all the wires running into the circuit board are connected.

Otherwise, the sensor may have failed and this will require service.
