Made a noise then blanked out without sound

I have a Sony KDF-E42A10 42" LCD purchased in 2005-paid almost $2000,00 for it. It suddenly made a noise, then went blank with no sound and no picture, but the red light blinks. I called Sony, they were of no help at all. I will never again purchase another SONY TV, In viewing this web site, it seems to have many problems with this product. I thought maybe it was the software problem but the rep came down and said it was a hardware problem. I have no clue, trying to figure out if I should have it repaired or buy a new TV.
Does anyone have a clue as to what it might be and how much it would cost to get fixed???

There are many things this could be. Have you checked the lamp? If the lamp is ghood, how many times does the red light blink? It will blink a number of times and then pause, and blink the same number again. This si an error code that helps with troubleshooting.

As technology evolves, Sony continually looks to stand behind the reliability of its televisions. It has come to our attention that a very limited number of televisions manufactured between 2003-2005, after a period of time exhibit a stationary scribble / random line pattern on the screen. Click here to see photos of this symptom.

As part of our commitment to quality, Sony is announcing that for any owner of this model television who paid out-of pocket expenses on or before May 26, 2006 for an estimate or repair service to replace the optical block for this specific issue, Sony will reimburse the customer by mail for his/her parts and labor expenses. To receive reimbursement, please follow completely the directions and terms on the claim form for reimbursement; all claims must be postmarked by May 31, 2007.

In addition, for any customer who later experiences this issue on one of the affected models, Sony will cover the cost of the optical block repair at no charge through September 30, 2007. All other terms of the Sony limited warranty continue to apply.

Screen became dim over time and then blank. Red LED lights blinks when on and sound is fine. Is this the bulb, unlike the others that went suddenly?

There is more than one flourescent tube in your TV, It could be possible that one after the other has failed, these should usually last a few years depending on usage.

If it is not the tubes then there may be a fault in the backlight inverter although this would more likely show up as a sudden failure.

How old is your TV?

Sony KDF-E55A20 No picture or sound

The little flashing light down on front of your TV will tell you the problem by the color of the light or the blinking intervals, this is the reason you can not turn it off is telling you something. The manual should have a section dedicated to this part, most likely is the bulb, the bulb is easy to access generally hold by one or tow screws you can pull it out to verify the integrity of the bulb. Then again check the LED light before anything then you go from there.
