Hello,
I have a Compaq Presario computer with a cd player/burner. It is about a year old.
All of the sudden, any CD that I try to play in it drags and sounds distorted and blurbly (I think I made a new word!).
What do you think is going on with it? I have not a clue!
And I don't have any other programs running at the same time, so there is no interference there.
If you could let me know, I would love you forever.
Thank you!

Replace the CD/DVD player -- less than $20 for a new one.
Take the old/broken one to the computer-store, to get a new one with matching power/data connectors.
If it's a sata connection on the drive you may not have any sata sockets on the motherboard. You will need something like an IDE to Sata adapter like this one: Adapter.
if nothing working try to uninstall the driver and reintall it and see if that work if not need to change it...go to device manager and delete the device and restart the computer and see if it will load new one.
so it might not have read is that the broken wire Ribbon or your player may foul
the lense, try to untangle and check up these possible damage inside, have a
nice day
Hi, Perform a system restore and take the computer back to a time before the problems started with burning, or you can download a different media player and try burning with that, real player as a good bit of software to use for burning and Nero is too (Nero is a devoted burning suite)
click here go to that link and use crucial system scan tool it will then tell you all you need to know and it tells you how much you can upgrade and also whats compatible let me know if you have problems with the link or if you need further assistance ok
Well, you already have a DVD burner in your machine, and A DVD ROM refers to memory.. you just need to download the upgrades available at Compaq's website. find out which Cd/DVD burner you have by downloading a marvelous freeware program called Belafrc Advisor, which will list all hardware and sofware on your computer, compete with versions and access codes. then go to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=320163&lang=en which lists all upgrades available for your model. DVD burners stopworking correctly when your non-microsoft burner program becomes corrupt, so be sure to upgrade that. If you have any problems, ask support.
