HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN ROCKING CHAIR CUSHIONS

If your rocking chair cushions are looking weary and old, you don't need to buy a new rocking chair. If you can sew, follow these simple tips and re-upholster your existing cushions or make new ones altogether. Your friends will be congratulating you on your brand new rocking chair.

1. Draw a design for your rocking chair cushion. If you are new to this, keep it simple with a rectangle or square design.

2.
Measure the area for the cushion, taking both length and width and then add 3 cms to each, and this will be the amount of fabric you need.

3. When you buy or cut out the cushion padding, use the original measurements ie without the extra 3cm you added on to the material.

4. Your padding material should be between 1 and 1 and a quarter inches thick.

5. Now cut out your cushion fabric. You need 2 pieces for each cushion. Make sure you keep the lines straight and that they are both exactly the same .

6.
Start at a corner and sew a piping (double seam) along the edge. Then sew the 2 connecting sides to that new seam and this should form a pocket that is connected on 3 sides but has an open top.

7.
Now stuff the cushion. Don't rush this part. Make sure none of the foam is folded over or squashed up inside the cover.

8. Now sew the final seam together. It can be a bit tricky so make sure it's lined up properly.

9.
Once you've finished the basic cushion you can always add extra details such as trimming or tassles.

Enjoy!

How to Choose a Rocking Chair?

Some people think that rocking chairs are just the traditional wooden chair used to either nurse a baby or for sitting on the porch watching the sunset, but rocking chairs can be a great addition to a kid's room or part of lounge furniture.
Nowadays rocking chairs don't just come in plain wood designs. There are different colors and styles, chairs made from plastic or wicker and even especially ergonomically designed ones. Here are some tips to help you pick the type of chair that is right for you:
1. Decide what kind of motion you are going for. Chairs can either move back and forth or side to side (known as gliders). The back and forth chairs take up more space but give a smoother motion.
2. Choose the kind of material that you want your chair to be made from. Traditional rocking chairs are made from wood but you can also get in metal and plastic. If you want an outdoor chair, bear it in mind when deciding on your material choice.
3. Some rocking chairs come with cushions, others you have to buy separately. When they are attached they don't move around or fall off, but can't be cleaned as easily. Also removable cushions give you the option of choosing colors and patterns and changing your mind as time goes on.
4. Finally decide what your budget is. Rocking chairs can be bought for as little as under $100 for a very basic wooden design and cost up to several thousand dollars for hand crafted and exotic woods. Pick a budget range and stick to it.

I would like to buy some cushions for our Adirondack chairs. Can anyone recommend a good site?

There are many sites with a variety of cushions to choose from. I recommend a weather-resistant cushion like this one - http://www.plowhearth.com/weather-resistant-outdoor-classic-adirondack-cushions_p1469.html

You can also make your own cushions if you would like. There is a great article and tutorial on making your own Adirondack cushions. It could be a fun project.

How much do custom made rocking chairs cost?

That really depends on your budget. Custom made rocking chairs are not cheap. Certain woods such as Maple, Cherry and Sycamore are cheaper than some exotic woods like Birds Eye Maple or Claro Walnut. When I was researching custom made rocking chairs I saw prices around $5,000-8,000.
