The GPS component of my Lowrance Elite-5 Gold is malfunctioning about 50% of the time.

The depth changes to a constant flashing depth of say 275ft when you are in say 100 ft water. Many times the GPS shows 2.3 or 2.5ft when you are in deep water. Sometimes a reboot fixes the problem, other times you just wait for 5 to 45 minutes and the unit resumes normal function. When the GPS shows 2.3 or 2.5 ft or similare the bottom 1/2 or more of the screen is black or brown. PS: We installed a replacement unit and transducer with exactly the same problems. Occasionally, the SOG reads Zero. This also eventually correct itself. Connections appear to be tight. Ideas?????

Hey Les, Since you have replace both the unit and transducer, you have eliminated/diagnosed most of your problem.. Its in the wiring... sometime when I am in full GPS mode I get erroneous depth readings..?? Have you tried a different GPS module (the "puck")?

SOURCE: lowrance x135 not functioning properly

Had the same issue with another brand. Turned out the transducer cable was picking up noise from other cables (power, trolling mtr. etc). Try moving the transducer cable away from any other cables. I put the cable in a 1/4 " plastic housing up to the point where it was above deck and it stopped all the strange stuff. Not sure about the temp issue??

SOURCE: hi i have installed a lowrance m52 s/gps in my boat i have turned it on while boat still on trailer and the unit is reading 5.6 ft deep, is this what it should say?

GPS uses satellites to determine position and altitude. Depending on where you are, above or below sea level, it may say you are flying in the air or a few hundred feet below the water. YOU have to determine what your mean altitude is by knowing what the local altitude is above or below sea level. If you were in Denver, Colorado, it would tell you that the boat was about 5,341 feet up in the air. In Death valley you would be below the water because it is below sea level, -272 feet.

The depth finder on my elite 5 Lowrance blinks if I go over 14 mph. And the screen gets very hot after a few minutes of run time?

Hey Robert,
the blinking is usually the result of the transducer losing contact with the water..
As far as the screen getting hot.. that is not good.. do you have this unit mounted in dash? It needs some ~cooling.. just some airflow..

How do i find water depth

Water depth should show automatically on your sonar page.
if it does not then either you have selected "stop sonar" under your sonar options or you have opted to turn off the depth displayou so the numbers don't show up.
if you areally viewing your GPS or split screen sonar/GPS page, sometimes the depth display is not visible on these pages unless you specifically instruct the unit to display it.
