Use 920xl black ink and have tried all recommendations from HP and forum and cannot get the printer to print in black other colors are OK.

I read earlier that black and magenta were printing but not cyan or yellow.....HP says to gently wipe the side of the electronic band but not the bottom, I did all of the above...and the printheads carefully, no change w/ the printout from "clean printheads"...the cyan had an occasional blue line(very fine) and there was no yellow.
So I trickled warm water over the cyan and yellow printheads....then thought what the heck, got a bowl of warm water and swished the printheads half submerged. They print perfect now I have the reds, yellows, greens and all the colors back w/ the clean printhead option and printed a coupon, it was perfect.
I hope it's not a short term fix...I developed the problem when I didn't print for a long time, hope this helps someone, Cyn
BTW, I flashed a light down in the recepticle for the cyan and yellow printheads and they were gunky w/ blue and yellow gook, so I clean that out w/ a damp lint free rag....paper towels shredded and I had to carefully remove the remnants.

I would definitely start by printing a self-test page. With your model press and hold the Cancel button and then press the Start Color Copy button and then release both buttons. When this page comes out you should be able to identify the 4 different color sections...black, cyan, magenta and yellow. If any of these seperate areas are choppy or non-existant, you need to replace your cartridge. Here is a link that will show you examples of what you should/shouldn't see on the self-test report.

SOURCE: Printer only won't print in black
My printer did that a few months ago. I tried everything to get it printing black but in the end I had to take the ink cartridge back and return a new one. Some ink cartridges dry out when they are being shipped if not stored in proper conditions.
SOURCE: Cannot print in black because color cartidge is out of ink
There is a 'low toner' override in the menu system, but if this has NOT been set already, a 'flag' will be set on the chip on the cartridges that are low/empty.
The printer needs to 'see' cartridges that are usable, i.e. NOT empty, in order to function.
It is possible to replace just the chips on the colour cartridges, but then any colour printing quality could be compromised of course, as the colours will be low/empty. You would then be able to use the printer as if it were a mono laser, just changing the black cartridge when needed
