The Designer II should not be oiled by the user. As with most computerized sewing machines, it's got a sealed bearing system. You do need to clean the bobbin area and the space under the bobbin case. See page 65 of the user manual to open stitch plate to clean the bobbin area and feed dogs. Next remove bobbin case holder and bobbin case to clean under there. Sometimes the interdental brushes can get some of the lint that the sewing machine brush misses.

I've checked several websites for a manual & couldn't find one
so I suggest going to these sites & email them about a manual

If you don't resolve the issue and this is a vintage machine, then there is some good user groups such as Vintage Singers under Yahoo where enthusiasts share info on their old machines. Good to lurk though or go through old threads first as there is often someone else who has asked similar question in the past. There may also be manuals in their files so have a dig around.

Here's a free copy to download. You have to prove you're human by typing a few letters displayed and then click "View Manual". It's not the best looking - but it is readable. You may find others that are better by googling the model. This one covers models 4040, 4041 & 4042.
