Nikon COOLPIX L5 Digital Camera Logo

My computer no longer recognizes my nikon coolpix L5.

I used to be able to plug my USB cable into the drive on my computer and my camera. It would recognize there were new photos and load them into Windows Live Photo Gallery. I have done nothing different to the camera, the drive or the photo gallery program. But when I plug it in now, nothing happens. I try turning the camera on and off, plugging and replugging it. It makes a clunking sound when I turn it on or unplug the cable, but nothing happens to download the pictures or recognize that the camera is plugged in. HELP!

Venugopal - I tried using Picasa also to download my pics and it doesn't recognize my camera either. I don't have another computer to try it out on. Louster - I don't have a card reader and am not familiar with what that is. JJ22 - I will try what you said, though I doubt it is that simple. Thanks; I hope someone can unlock this puzzle.

JJ22 - I really wasn't able to twist the cable, but I tried anyway and that doesn't work. I might add that I did try from my office computer and was able to download the photos! So the problem must be with my home laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L355. Can anyone help??

I'm not sure what to add. This is such a mystery to me and I really hoped someone would have the answer!

Thank you. I did search online and became aware of the little card readers and I ordered one. However, I also continued to search for an answer to why my computer no longer recognized my camera. There was apparently some registry file it was missing. I ran a program called PC HealthBoost, and now it works again!

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

SOURCE: Mac doesn't recognize my Nikon Coolpix

Use a cardreader to download your pictures. Download them to a folder you create on your desktop. From there, you can do anything you want with them.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

How to transfer photos from my coolpix L20 camera to my computer? Thanks..

There are two easy ways to transfer photos.
1) Connect via a USB cable. The cable came with your camera. If you lost it, you can buy a new one on line or from Nikon. The cable has a small plug that goes to the camera and a large end that plugs into a USB port on your computer. Once the cable is connected, turn on your camera and your computer will recognize your camera's memory card just like it recognizes an external hard drive or other device. If you go to Explorer on a PC or Finder if you have a Mac, you will see it as a device. Open the device and the folder(s) it contains then copy and paste or cut and paste the jpg files from that location to a folder on your hard drive.
2) Transfer your photos directly from your SD memory card to your computer using either your computer's SD card reader or a USB external SD card reader that you can purchase on line for $20 or less. Open the battery compartment door and you will see the end of the SD card. Remove the card from the camera by pushing it in (it is spring loaded) and releasing. It will pop out. Insert the card in your card reader and your computer will recognize the card as if it were a hard drive or similar. Follow the instructions that I gave you for transferring the files above. Both methods can be simplified if you use software such as Nikon's Transfer NX.

Click on CTRL A to highlight all of them.7. Drag and drop them into the file you created on your desktop.8. Use the "safely remove hardware" function (in the tray in the lower right of your screen) to remove the cardreader.9. Double-click on the folder and it will open with your picture files.

USB not recognized, no safe removal icon, wont switch off

I had the same problem. Nothing seemed to help, I even re-installed Nikon View. This helped, though. After you've connected the USB cable to both computer and camera, twist the camera end of the cable towards front of the camera. It seems like either the cable or the socket in the camera is damaged.
