My SONY DVD+RW DW-56A won't burn a DVD

Windows XP
Dell Inspiron 6000 (DVD drive came installed)
Roxio Easy Media Creator 10
burns music&data cds ok, though sometimes have got bluescreen errors (never figured that out really either, most often seemed something to do with an old version of Roxio and trying to save photos to CD; doesn't happen that often)

according to Sony my firmware is up to date
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling
I'm using appropriate blank DVD

how do I get it to copy/burn a dvd?

    I'm trying to burn an already copied DVD. it uploaded without problems.

  • boone_ra Dec 19, 2008

    the troubleshooter does not list an option for will not burn a dvd

  • boone_ra Dec 20, 2008

    I think yer right, Roxio had trouble playing it but Windows Media did play it. but it has the do not copy warning on it so I bet Roxio won't burn a copy.

    thanks for the response, sorry for the false alarm

I am suspecting that you are running into a copyright issue that wasn't removed when they made the copy.... or the copy was corrupted... will it play back on your machine ?

Refurbished Dell Optiplex GX280 with DVD/CD-RW Drive will not recognize blank CDs in order to burn music. I was told by the seller that I had to purchase burn software. (I also had to purchase CinePlayer...

The windows might be corrupted. You could try editing the windows registry. here are the steps:

In order to delete upper and lower filters you're going to have to edit the registry. The usual cautions apply. If the registry is not edited properly your whole system can crash.

1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
7) Reboot your computer
8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

last option, you could try installing imgburn. here's the download link: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

If nothing happens, your dvd drive is bad.

Good Luck,

IS THIS SOFTWARE SUITABLE FOR USE WITH SONY DVD RW

Hi,
Yes it certainly should be compatible with the CD/DVD drive.

Roxio has it's own burning software included with the program, you will just have to explore the software until you work out how to burn a CD using Roxio itself.

If you want to try another burning program try Nero 9 trial. All you have to do is enter your email address and then download the software. Nero is an excellent bit of software, i personally have never had any problems with it.
Get Nero 9 here >>>>>>>>>>

Would like to upgrade Dell Inspiron 1300 c.d drive

Is your dvd rom drive a RW drive? if not, you need to buy a RW-dvd rom drive to be able to RW dvds or cds.

If you already have a RW DVD Rom drive, you need to have a burning application (ex. nero burning rom). You can check on the internet and download a freeware and install it on your machine.

Reads and writes cds,reads dvds but does not burn dvds,

This drive is normally supplied with a couple of Dells.
(because of compatibility) Inspiron 700m,710m

If you have another machine for testing?
check the disk for contents to see if the data burn happened,
this will explain a few things in your processes.

Uninstall/Reinstall the drive and reboot then try again.

Have you tried a full system reinstall yet?
Did it fix your problem?Please let me know thanks

DVD-RW drive burns music CDs and DVDs, but not data CDs

Alright. Seems like Windows, for some reason, doesn't think your drive is able to burn things when trying to deal with this kind of disc.

I'll need further information, like if you use another program to burn music CDs, and what other things might have changed the registry settings. I know of a fix that resolves issues with the Windows version of data CD burning, but it only applies to CD-R and CR-RW drives..

EZCD 5.0 and EZCD 6.0

I don't think that 6 and 5 are compatible 6 is an upgrade from 5. I have just 5 on one of my old XP computers and it works fine, but that's all I have. I went to the website and they are not giving any support for Roxio 6 anymore.
I will tell you that Roxio Easy Media Creator is fantastic. The things you can do with that are unbelieveable. I got it at Sam's Club for about $70. But I know that does not solve your problem.

Roxio 5
To burn data files, Open project selector, make a data cd, click data cd project. WhenEasy CD Creator 5 opens and you choose your files to burn, try this: Select Disc at Once Radio button, click okay and click burn.

OS: Issue When burning a CD or DVD, you receive an error, burning does not complete, or your media is rejected. Resolution Burning errors can happen for a variety of reasons. Roxio has found that doing the following steps resolves about 80% of all burning issues. Please give all these steps a try and see if it fixes your writing problems.

  1. Update your drive's firmware/drivers. Most companies regularly update their firmware and drivers. If you are unsure what model your burner is and its firmware, click here to find out.

  2. Enable DMA. Direct Memory Access enables better efficiency of data. For more info, check how to enable DMA.
  3. The media. Check the following:
    • The disc is clean and unused.
    • The media is recommended by your burner's manufacturer or try a different brand, preferably a name brand, if you continue to have problems.
    • Make sure that media (-R/+R, -/+RW, dual-layer compatibility) is supported by the burner by checking burner's manual or manufacturer's website. This is especially true for some Blu-Ray burners which do not support CD-R/RW media.

  4. If your burner is external, make sure it is connected directly to the computer via USB/Firewire and not a hub or other other device like a sound card.
  5. Update to the latest PX Engine. The PX Engine improves compatibility with newer burners on the market.
  6. A reinstall of the burner's drivers may also help.
    • Windows XP: Go to My Computer and choose Properties.
    • Windows Vista: Go to Start --> Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> Device Manager.
    • Click on the Hardware tab.
    • Select Device Manager
    • Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives, then select your burner and uninstall it by right -licking on it.
    • Reboot.

I do know if you have Roxio5 you cannot installed Nero 6 InCD, not compatible. Other than all of the above, I have no more suggestions. I am really sorry, wish I could work on your computer to figure out the problem. This is my specialty. Reloading computer and figuring out problems. It is so much easier hands on.
